CHAPTER FIVE • THE CRUEL PRINCE

she soared so high

one a mere

speck of shadow

twin to her own

she so loathed

she soared so high

the other

a sky

with a million

stars

she had wanted

to touch them

but she had known

that light abandoned

shadow

so she had

abandoned them

instead

had distanced

and soared higher.

Excerpt from Feathers Of Shadow by Thea Brownie

The smoky savour of freshly-brewed espresso blanketed her as Emery tapped her feet on the floor, getting restless waiting for a certain person to grace her with his presence. It had been an hour since the time agreed upon had passed. At this point, Emery wouldn't be surprised if he bailed. Still, she waited, left with no choice.

The effervescent thrum of people and fresh foam, staff shouting out orders from behind tall counters, the sound of the bell ringing as people came and left, the whirr of coffee grinding. The world was running except she sat, stagnant.

They had opted to meet at a cafe that was neither too shiny nor too shabby. Else anywhere, Emery could find. So, she had sent Elijah the location of her uncle's cafe. An hour and no sign of him yet.
