Shuchun's POV

I untack Zhao and Mulan does the same with her horse. I leave her in peace as our horses begin to drink from their water troth. I go inside to see mum talking to dad. "Congratulations Shuchun" dad says smiling when I enter the room.

"I only wish Mulan had also been matched" I tell him sadly with my head bowed. Father sighs giving me a warm hug. "What if he doesn't let me be a nurse? What if he is cruel?" I ask them whimpering. That is my worst fear aside from tigers.

"I doubt it my dear daughter, besides your mother and I well not agree to a marriage. If we believed you or Mulan would be abused" he assures me. "Go get ready for dinner while I go speak with Mulan" he tells me. I nod my head and go to mine & Mulan's shared room.

I a damp clothe and sit in front of the vanity. I remove my make-up and let my hair down. "Come here child" mother says grabbing my brush and starts to brush my hair.

"Mother did you love father when you first meet?" I ask her curious.

"No, not at first. But I grew to love him quickly and he gave me two beautiful daughters" she tells me smiling. I sigh sadly thinking about how men seem to only like me for my looks. "Why are you sad Shuchun?" mum asks me concerned as she puts the brush down.

""I see the way men look at me and hear what people of my looks. Why can't they just look past them and get to know the real me? I don't care if I'm pretty or not. I just want to be able to help people. A chance to prove I can be important" I tell her.

"You're beautiful Shuchun and people admire that. And that will never change" she tells me and I sigh sadly. I don't want to be admired for my looks. "I am sure your future husband will take the time to get to know the real you. Before making his decision and will not base his decision it on your looks alone" she assures me

"If he does that at least, then I'd happily marry him and bear his children" I tell her with smile.

"There's that beautiful smile" mum says with a smile. "Will you help with dinner tonight?" she asks me.

"Of course and I am sure Mulan will do the tea" I state. I then go to brush the horses. I brush Zhao first. But before I could do Mulan's horse I hear the sound of horns and horse hooves approaching. I put the brush down and head towards the gate where see others have already gathered. I spot my grandmother by the gate alone and walk over to her. "Grandmother what is happening? Where are mother, father and Mulan?" I ask her.

"Messenger from the imperial army" she tells me and points to the roof of the wall. I look to see Mulan on it and roll my eyes. Just then the thin guy on the brown horse unrolls a scroll and begins to speak.

"Citizens I bring a blockumation from the Imperial city" he declares. "The huns have invaded China" he states. We all gasp in shock and I see a mother escort her child back inside. "By order of the Emperor, one man from every family must serve in the imperial army he tells us and looks at the scroll.

I knew where this was going and Mulan is not going to take it quietly. I just pray she does not upset father. I stay beside Grandma as mum arrives with dad. I tune back into the messenger's speech. "The Lee family!" he calls. An old man and his son approach him.

"I will serve the Emperor in my father's place" the young man tells him. The messenger hands him the scroll. The man bows and leaves with his father.

"The Fa Family!" the messenger calls. Father hands mother his walking stick and limps forward to accept the scroll. I see Mulan run from the corner of my eye and try to stop her. But I'm to late just as father said he was ready to serve the Emperor.

"Father you can't go!" Mulan shouts and gets in between him & the messenger. Grandma walks forward to go retrieve Mulan as I stay with mother. "Please sir, my father has already fought for..." she starts to explain. The messenger yells at her to be silent and I glare him. No one yells at my sister.

"Remain quiet" mum tells me firmly. I grit my teeth and remain silent. But continue to glare at the messenger, glad he is not my match.

"You would do well to teach you daughter to hold her tongue in a man's presence" he tells father.  Grandma pulls Mulan away from father. "Report tomorrow at the Wu Shu camp" the messenger tells father handing him his scroll.

"Yes sir" he says taking it before turning around. He limps past mother and I not taking his walking stick. Mulan follows with grandmother as he returns home. I wrap my arm around Mulan as we all go home. Mulan and I help mother prepare dinner along with some tea.

We are all at the table about to have dinner as Mulan serves the tea. "You shouldn't have to go" she tells father as she puts the pot down. Mum tries to silent her. "There are plenty of young men to fight for China" she states. Ignoring mum's warning look. Though I agree with Mulan, I know better then to anger our father.

"It is an honor to protect my country and my family" he tells her.

"So you'll die for honor?" Mulan demands.

"I will die doing what's right" he states.

"But you..." she tries to protest. I grab her hand and she looks at me. I shake my head.

"I know place and as does you sister, it is time you learned your" father tells her firmly. Mulan looks at him wide eyed before running from the room. I sigh and stand up.

"Father, she only did that because she loves and cares about you. She does not want to lose you. None of us do" I tell him calmly. I go after Mulan and find her sitting on the dragon statue in the rain. I lean against the statue beside her, not caring about the rain. "Don't listen to him Mulan, he'll apologize before he leaves tomorrow" I assure her.

"He shouldn't have to go" she tells me.

"I agree, but it's not like you can take his place" I tell her. Mulan's eyes light up and I shake my head at her. "No Mulan, if you get caught you'll be put to death" I tell her.

"It's the only way to protect father, are you with me?" she asks me.

"I can't change your mind can I?" I ask her. She shakes her head. "Fine, but we pray first to the ancestors" I tell her. We go to our family temple and pray to our ancestors before going inside. Mulan and I then sneak into our parents room where they are already asleep.

Mulan takes the scroll and places our combs on the nightstand. I place a letter on top of them before we leave the room. We go to the room where father keeps his old war armor and cut each others hair. Lucky dad has two suits of armor. Mulan and I remove our dresses. Then put on mans clothes after putting our hair in buns and do up each others armor.

I place the scroll in my belt once we're dress

I place the scroll in my belt once we're dress. We then put one sword each on each of our belts. Luckily dad has two. Except mine is smaller and lighter then Mulan's.

We head to the stable and at first our horses feared us until they realized who we were. Once we saddled them and packed their saddle bags. We mounted them. Mulan then leads the way out of town towards the Wu Shu camp as it continues to rain. I pray my family stays safe and we make it back alive.
