When your value is determined by the ignorant, you're bound to feel out of place if you were among those with the least value. When your ability to think is shunned and suppressed, you're bound to seek a place where such isn't so. Some can withstand it, others can't. Sofia couldn't. But there's more to it than just leaving. It's all she ever knew, and she's about to face a world she doesn't know. There are darker sides to the community's picture. Those who leave. Those who are kicked out. The pariahs. The ones deemed as less than a person-- the 'un-people'. Is the outside really all that different?
