Globe was happy with her life as a Device in the Kingdom. It was a place where Devices and Users got along as equals, a place with no disease, no hunger, and no gods. She brought rain to the fields and was content to live out there five year lifespan and be fed to the Machine, to be reincarnated infinitely with all the other Users and Devices when it was their time. Or she was, until one feast day a starship is brought down in the nearby tunnels, and the survivors are round up and captured. The survivors are a band of humans, dangerous creatures that mimic the appearance of Users. From their captivity they immediately try to convince the Users that they are all trapped in some sort of prison. Globe doesn't like them, they don't treat her like a person, and she isn't sure if they are worthy to be fed to the Machine. However despite her best efforts to ignore them, she can't deny that something about what they're saying fills her with a deep sense of dread, and though she tries to suppress it, that dread only grows as she comes closest to the day that it's her turn to get fed to the Machine.
