Nex is a German-born dog Catholic farmer in the 1900s. His agricultural living is cut short by natural forces and with the declaration of war by his country, is drafted into service where he's defiled by the reality of war. Nex then finds himself in a complex relationship with a pious vixen nurse who similarly has feelings toward the dog in a test of temptation. Meanwhile, Eugene is a wolf French soldier, who also being scared by the war, tries to cope with his fiance and her family before being shipped back out to the frontlines. The two opposing sides find themselves pitted against each other with friends at the Battle of Verdun in a harsh, depressing, extravagant, hellish world, and are tested about their morals, beliefs, and questioning on not just whether or not a just war can exist, but the debate of whether the taking of another humans life is acceptable.
