She was his salvation. I was his liberation.
With her, he would climb to unimaginable heights, but I don't think that was what he needed.
I look into the gem-stone eyes of the ex-hero in front of me, their face filled with a storm of emotions. After everything we've been through together, I'd be surprised if they don't have the urge to take me out where I stand. However, fate must smile on the prolonging of our sufferings.
"Why...?"
They ask. My brain ran slower, and slower; the cogs not daring to turn and interrupt the stillness of the city that never sleeps.
"Why."
Not a question this time, but rather a demand. Years ago, this scene would have broken my heart, however, the gods had enough mercy to numb those who have been too brutally battered. If the organ within my chest was shattering, I couldn't feel it.
"Because you loved her," I say simply. "But I loved you first."
A wave of nausea passes through me as I clutch my stomach, falling to my knees. When air finally fills back into my lungs I watch his fisted hand and his angered breathe. A punch to the gut frigging hurt.
