Lilliana Grimes doesn't want to get married. She is twenty, meaning on the higher side of the average age for marriage in Bethel, a fundamentalist Christian society that promotes total submission to a woman's husband. She is arranged to marry Carson Shell, a wealthy senator's son, whose reputation of being strange is spoken all across the country, but that's just scratching the surface. Karena-Theresa LaVaughn is the Grimes family's maid, and at just two years older than her best friend Lilliana, has lived a transgressed life of murder, deception, and promiscuity. She is currently enthralled in an affair with their driver, Zane Williams. She is a rebel in the war against Bethel, and has been for many years. Kesiah Shell Heilyn grieves the loss of her dying husband Jamison, a former lawyer who saved her from an incestuous relationship with her father Isaac, who contracted Alzheimer's disease five years into their marriage. She learns of the rebellion from her stepdaughter Evelina Heilyn and sees it as a way to save her immediate family, and a way to connect with her brothers, who are actively involved in the fight. Adriana Lopez is a seventeen-year-old girl, newly married, and a member of a Catholicism-based Mexican rebel family, whose devout practices have been threatened by Bethel's government, as it spreads throughout the world. Her entrance into the rebellion makes her question everything about her family and her own identity.
