Emily Fittes has known she's immune to ghost touch since she was 5. Her family has tried to keep this a secret so her cousin, Penelope Fittes can't test on her (Or so she thought) But when Fittes agents come into their town, Emily has to leave.

Once she finds a sapphire necklace, her world starts changing really fast. She also joins an agency named Lockwood and Co. It seems like they dealt with the Penelope problem, and the Problem itself for that manner. But then why is the Problem spiking up again? And why does Emily feel like she's getting watched.

Spoilers to book 5. Do not read if you have not read that far into the book series yet.
