Within the walls of the royal palace lies the passageway to a place where there are thousands of unfinished stories. Their endings are the responsibility of one soul: the storykeeper. Every storykeeper has had someone to hand the secrets down to; a backup plan in case an ending ends up being their ending; an apprentice. Being a storykeeper is dangerous work; but when Bridgette loses control in her search for assistance, only then does she learn it can be fatal. Being alone means risking all the past generations of storykeepers and, more importantly, the chance of every story finding their ending. Having accompaniment means risking espionage. Finding a story's ending means risking finding your ending.
