I tell stories. I do it with photographs and words, sound and combinations of them, big projects and #smallstories. I love to talk to people, to learn about them. I am digitally inclined: I led the startup of the 13th newspaper website (think about it; not that long ago either), edited the first syndicated column about the Internet, built hundreds of web sites for teachers and students to learn how to write better. I love the outdoors and have explored places unseen by man.
I grew up in a tiny town in the mountains where everyone knew everything about everybody. I was not Geoffrey or Geoff; I was "Doc's youngest."
For 33 years of my professional life I was a journalist, mostly with newspapers, where I learned from some of the nation's best. I was fortunate to win numerous national and regional awards.
In 2006, with a founding grant from the Vermont Business Roundtable, I left journalism and transformed a newspaper feature into an organization: Young Writers Project, a web-centric, nonprofit that helps young people find their voice and improve their writing. We encouraged kids to take creative risk in safe spaces and learned that kids, when left to their own devices, will give each other respect and support. I ran the project for 12 years.
Now I am in my Third Life and am finishing a novel more than three years in the making, Hiram Falls about a fictitious Vermont town with secrets and a ghost. Five character sketches from the novel have been presented on stage.
I will be publishing Hiram Falls on Substack (with excerpts here) for free - in serial form, both audio and text - and ask readers to donate to four non-profits that are helping me with this project. I will also release an e-book and paperback in ways designed to help independent bookstores.
Whenever there is great light, I chase around for pictures and have started a project which I call I Love My Work, a series of digital stories showcasing people devoted to their work.
