hi and welcome to my ted talk.

the word “gy*sy” (notice the asterisks it’s not there by accident) is an ethnic slur for the romani people. it is widely used in the phrase “gy*sy soul” which many people (maybe like yourself) use to describe their love for travel and their lack of conformity. people believe we move from place to place on our own freewill — this is false. we are forced from our homes because people believe we are criminals who curse their families and steal their children. we have been traded like cattle to countries, systematically sterilized in an attempt to lower our population, beaten for crimes we did not commit, our houses have been burned, denied medical help; but people don’t know about that because we have been written out of history, save for the brief sentence stating 1.5 romani people were slaughtered in wwii.

as you can see “gy*sy soul” isn’t the best phrase to use when describing yourself, because you most likely don’t even know the history that follows that word. a great alternative is something like “amelia earhart resurrected” or “balls like earhart” because she was pretty kick ass and flew solo across the atlantic ocean even though everybody deemed unrealistic for a woman. she’s a great underdog story.

thank you for attending my ted talk.

Okay very informational but FYI I and a actual gypsy and I am also Jewish and my mom named that without the knowledge on what was on my dads family history background so it’s not my fault that I just so happen to have the name and as well as being one and if expressing myself this way bothers you I’m sorry that I often you for trying to break the stereotypical thought that comes to mind when hearing that word.
