Sometimes I wonder about the strange ways life keeps its balance.

Some of us grow up learning to measure what we ask for, to understand what can be afforded, to keep our wants small so that someone else doesn't have to carry the weight of them. We learn responsibility before we learn indulgence, restraint before we learn how to simply enjoy.

And perhaps, somewhere along the way, we begin to believe that being careful, doing what is right and carrying our share without making it someone else's burden will eventually lead us somewhere peaceful.

But life doesn't always seem to work that way.

Sometimes you watch people who were never afraid to take, spend, ask, demand or simply live as though consequences belonged to somebody else and somehow they seem to arrive at the very things you spent years being patient for.

And then you find yourself wondering, quietly, not out of hatred and not even truly out of envy but from a place of exhaustion: Was all that restraint worth it?

I don't have an answer.

Maybe being good was never a transaction. Maybe life never promised that doing the right thing would make the road easier.

But some days, when you're tired enough, it is difficult not to wonder why the person who carried everything carefully seems to have so little left to hold, while the person who took freely seems to have everything.

Perhaps that is one of the hardest things about growing up: realizing that life doesn't always distribute its rewards according to the effort, sacrifice or goodness we put into it.

And still, somewhere beneath all that disappointment, there is a quiet part of me that doesn't want to become someone else just because their way seemed easier.

I only wish, sometimes, that being myself hadn't been quite so exhausting.
