Alright, time for a review with Tejano on Legendary Picture’s new movie, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”
First off, in true Hollywood fashion (at least, in the present day), the movie focuses much more on spectacle than any real substance, don’t go in expecting a moving and emotional story. However, they did (somehow) manage to make the story in the movie somewhat interesting and the human characters likable, although I feel that that’s just personal preference. The movie, since it’s part of the Legendary’s Godzilla extended universe, does follow the previous movies story wise, but it’s not really mandatory to watch them beforehand, since, as I have mentioned previously, the movie is more so about spectacle than its story.
One really neat thing that I noticed was that the movie follows the Kaijus a lot more than in any other movie Legendary has produced. In most of the movies, a big chunk of screen time is spent with spent with characters who aren’t fully fleshed out and aren’t the main focus of the movie, however, in this movie, most of the screen time is devoted (not wasted) to showing the Kaijus interacting with the previously established Hollow Earth, along with the new monkeys (as seen in the trailer). There is a lot of action scenes and a lot of breaking buildings, which, for a history nerd like me, physically made me cringe when they destroyed structures like the Pyramids of Egypt (as seen in the second trailer).
Overall, the story is decent, the spectacle is very entertaining, a lot of new concepts are introduced, and overall, it’s a pretty good action flick.
My final rating is a 8/10 (with 7/10 being a decent film)
The rating on Rotten Tomatoes (at least the audience score) is 92%, so I recommend this movie if y’all got a couple bucks spare and a bit of time to burn.
