If you can have readers love or hate your characters this means you're doing a great job writing it. Because regardless of what the reader thinks of the characters, you, the writer are reaching their mind at another level and that is amazing writing. Likes or criticism for a book or character only means exactly that, you reached your reader, you made the book come to life for them and this guarantees that they will share your book with others.
