there are cracks in your eyes
and i'm sad to say i don't know why
i'm intrigued by your torn seams and rough edges
i wonder what it would take to mend it

a flickering smile, an awkward stance
you're not much better at this than i am
perhaps we could teach each other the things we already know

suppose we plant a garden together
and watch the flowers grow
through the bullet holes in the four cement walls
under the steel door
and through the bars
blooming in the center of our
blindingly beautiful, everlasting heart
