I would like to write a novel about a young man who has bipolar disorder, living in a dystopian San Francisco.

I have little understanding of this mental illness, though, and would love any pointers anyone can give me, to help me make this realistic and relatable.

@Black_panther31 Hey, thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to reply to me. :)

@Karlymeggenhill I personally don't have any experience with bipolar disorder. However, a good place to research it is on the NHS website (UK). I've always found it immensely helpful when researching Schizophrenia and BPD.

Just wondering,
          NON laughing matter, all.
          Does that include Asthma?

randomwritergirl101

@HeroSansInSans Asthma doesn't count as #chemnotcharacter because #chemnotcharacter is about the brain's chemistry not affecting a character's personality. Asthma isn't a mental illness. HOWEVER, a character thinking that they have asthma when they don't and it's part of a mental illness is #chemnotcharacter.

i want to thank you for creating this account. i have depression, anxiety, as well as bipolar disorder and seeing this, you bringing more attention to mental disorders, makes me incredibly happy. so, thank you.

jackalwriter

Hey, does the story have to completely revolve around the character's disorder? Or does the character just have to have a disorder? Cause... well, one of my characters in my story (the main character) has anxiety, derealization, and a bit of depression, but the story is more like an "action/superhero" story.

zellandia

@jackalwriter Hi! Responding from my personal account here. To answer your question, no, it doesn't. In fact, stories where mental illness is just sort of part of a character's disposition are incredibly honest—life goes on, even with people struggling to get through the day-to-day. Please send a link to your story so I can add it to the reading lists!
