The most worrying part about this is where things can possibly go from here. If I'm not wrong, Wattpad was bought out recently. If you know anything about buyouts, the purchasing company searches for every excuse to cut costs in one way or another. The private DM's feature likely costs a little more than they'd like to keep it up for use given server space and storage requirements. The 18+ thing was the first sign. Advertisers don't like that sort of thing. I had no issue with it apart from the outright deletion of works, no matter how- odd- said works were. The private messages, on the other hand, are almost certainly a cost cutting move that they knew would be unpopular from the get-go. I predict another massive hit to the fanfiction side of this site is coming down the line for advertising sake. Tumblr did it. Onlyfans did it (ew, I know). And a sleuth of other sites did it, too. Execs see money flow without understanding what drives their business, then end up running it into the ground all because advertising is everything to them.
I'd say have a great day, but this is NOT one of those momens. Good job, team. You somehow managed to piss the likes of me off.
