To say that we are not an independent species is a lie, stemming either from ignorance or from denial. Yes, our independence relies heavily upon cooperation, but it is independence all the same. In all things, there is something of the independent, and of the dependence. It is equally balanced at times, unequally balanced at others. But there is always an element of each, and in fact to say that there is not is to deny all that we have gained in terms of knowledge, acceptance, value, emotion, structure, and all else that we have gained since we became. All progress is made not only by the coming together of the community, but by a change in each person's mind. We cannot be good until each one of us is good, so that the community depends on each other to present an image, but also each individual must choose for themselves.
One need only look back on their past to see that in every inch of progress there has been help and also something within, struggling alone.
When I open a door, I am opening it using the help that was once given to me by someone older, I am depending upon their knowledge to add to my own. But I also must take the effort from myself. I must draw that memory from my own mind, I must have my muscles move in such a way that opens the door correctly, I must put in all the immediate work. So the act is both dependant and independent.
