As you write, put yourself into your books. You don't have to be sappy or melodramatic or try to hard. Just slip yourself into the character's shoes---feel what they feel---and write from there. If you care deeply and passionately about what happens to a character, so will the reader. And that's what keeps them turning the pages for more, more, more.
