Back in school, my teachers constantly pressured me by saying, "Write what you know."

Bullshit.

Write what you WANT.

I hated that "write what you know trash." What you know is boring! It can hold you back! Write what you want! If you're going to delve into crazy romantic mush or wild action, or unbelievable fantasy... then do it! No one has to read it; no one even has to understand it! Just start writing! 

I like going by the moniker,

"If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit."

It doesn't need to make a lick of sense. Just start writing. Whatever comes to mind. Word vomit onto the page: notes, scraps, chatter. Writing is akin to drawing. Sometimes, you gotta scribble. It won't always be a masterpiece, and sometimes it's not always coherent. It may just be warm-up nonsense. But just getting it onto paper can help you form honest thoughts and ideas for later. Don't even worry about typing. Get a notebook and a pen, and start scribbling.
