I placed my hands weakly against his chest. "But I will always be with you. Maybe no longer next to you... no longer alive, but in here.", I pat his chest.
He closes his eyes, his heart hammering against my hand. "In here," he repeats softly, his voice choked with tears. "Always in here." He holds my hand against his chest, his heart beating a painful rhythm, a constant reminder of his wife and his loss. "Forever in here."
“Stay.. until the end,” I whispered pleadingly and took his hand, not letting go.
He squeezes my hand tightly, nodding vigorously even as fresh tears spill down his cheeks. His other hand gently strokes my hair, committing every strand to memory. "I'm not going anywhere. I'll stay right here until... until the very end."
I smiled weakly... "Do you remember... the first time you told me you were in love with me?"
His eyes soften at the memory, a ghost of a smile touching his lips despite the anguish. "How could I forget?" He chuckles weakly with tears in his eyes, the sound muffled by emotion. "We were at the park, feeding those damn ducks you loved so much."
He leans in, his forehead resting against mine, our breaths mingling. "I remember looking at you, feeding those stupid ducks, and thinking to myself, 'I'm in love with her. I'm so fucking in love with her.' And then I just... said it."
