“To set the record straight about what happened that night first of all and to get you back, you know, finish what we started.”
I rolled my eyes,”Make it quick...”
“That night when… we were supposed to meet at the caves. I was on my way. I was taking a shortcut through the backroads to avoid the traffic and…” He inhaled and exhaled shakily as if being forced to recount a childhood trauma, “I got run over by that guy who I beat up in the club.”
My heart sank to my stomach, “What?” my voice was as quiet as a whisper, I wasn’t even sure if I had said anything at all.
“I guess his ego was bruised from getting his ass beat by a guy who’s younger and he and his friends spotted me, hit me with their car and I went flying off my motorcycle.”
“Luckily, I wasn’t too hurt when I landed, I had a couple broken bones, sure, but I was still conscious. So he and his boyfriends come over to where I’m sprawled out in the bushes, at that point, I didn’t even know it was him. Didn’t recognize him at first honestly, so naturally I assumed that they were there to help me…” he looked down at the cold tiles of the floor, forlorn.
I was so stunned by this information that I was at a complete loss for words. My lips parted and closed and I felt tears begin to tease my tear ducts.
“So they roughed me up a bit and took me into their truck. That’s when I managed to get my phone before they took it from me to tell you not to contact me anymore. I didn’t want them to know that I was on my way to see you. I was terrified that they would go and find you all by yourself in a secluded cave far from any civilization. I mean, even when I was getting my teeth handed to me, I was still thinking of you. So, I didn’t stand you up because I wasn’t into you anymore. I had no other choice, I had to protect you."
