Hi there, thanks for the comments. For myself, I try to visualize a scene like a movie. What or who do you want to focus the reader's attention on in that frame? What kind of mood are you setting? And so forth. I try to sketch out a few ideas first and then fill in the rest of my description around those elements. Regardless of the process you use, I think the key thing in description and setting a scene is not to get too bogged down in the details of making the setting "real" that you lose your momentum in the plot. Always keep a purpose in mind for your description. Good movies tend to only focus on details that move your story along, and I think this concept also applies on some level to other forms of storytelling.
