Chapter 17
I was wrong; so, so unbelievably wrong. I wake up screaming, crying, shaking and terrified. I just watched the Games for a third time. I sit in the centre of the bed curled in a nest of sheets trying to convince myself I was only dreaming. I can feel my whole body shaking as I slowly begin to rock myself back and forth. I slowly think back over the last few hours, to the Victory Banquet at President Snow’s mansion where I was constantly being asked questions, being congratulated and having my picture taken. I had to leave the room for a minute because I was starting to become almost claustrophobic. My thoughts are broken by the creak of the door opening. I look up to see Andraya the Avox girl. She enters my room silently and begins to pick up the sheets and clothes from the floor. Then she lays them down on the bed and stands there looking at me. She looks at me, her eyes burrowing into me and I feel as if she is staring into my soul. Then slowly she kneels on the bed and wraps her arms around me. I feel almost safe in her arms as I lean into her. She cradles me in her arms, her head resting on mine making a quite ‘shh’ sound. When I have calmed down slightly she releases me and I slowly lie back down and allow her to cover me with the sheet. Then I notice her hands, only a few scars remain of the wounds. She sees me looking at them and smiles before giving me a fleeting kiss on the forehead and leaving the room. I lay there as the sun begins to creep through my window. ‘Last day, my finally day in the capitol. I am going home!’ I think as I stare at the strip of purple fabric still around my wrist. ‘I am finally going home.’
“Come on! Up, Up, Up!” Selena calls and I slowly rise and make my way towards the smell of food. I barely have time to eat before my prep time arrive and drag me away. They talk and talk and talk but say nothing. I am trying to think of what to do today in the finally interview, ‘Show my true feeling? Or keep pretending?’ I am still trying to decide when Pontius comes in with my outfit. I dress quickly and am taken to the sitting room where Caesar and a small group of camera men are waiting. “Ah Haymitch!” Caesar cries as I enter, “Are you ready for the interview?”
“As ready as I will ever been.” I say.
“It will be fine; don’t worry.” Caesar tells me. ‘I’ll take your word for it.’ I think as I take my position. I hear the count down and suddenly we are streaming live across Panem. Caesar is as wonderful as ever, laughing, crying, joking, it defiantly makes up for my poor performance. I try to keep some of that old Haymitch I found in the first interviews but find it extremely difficult. I answer question after question no matter how horrible but then we get to dangerous territory. “And what about you’re ally? Maysilee Donner? Can you tell us a little about her?” Caesar asks. My whole body becomes numb, I can’t speak and even if I could I don’t know what to say. “She…she…”
“You cared about her, I can see that.” Caesar says gently.
“We became good friends.” Is all I can say. Caesar smiles warmly at me before continuing. “So Haymitch we were all on the edge of our seats jurying that final battle. Tell me, that trick with the force field, was that planned?”
“Yes. Well I saw it as an advantage, she was a great fighter but I had the brains to use the arena to my advantage.” I say smiling smugly.
“Well we really weren’t expecting that, can you talk us through it?” Caesar asks. I smile and begin but out of the corner of my eye I catch sight of Lucas, his expression is grave and he looks almost tearful. ‘Why? Was it something I said?’ I think before Caesar gets my attention again and I continue with my story.
