Chapter 2: By the Pillars

The halls were indefinitely quieter than the previous day. With hands full of books, y/n made her way to her next class, transfigurations. McGonagall's transfigurations class admittedly never striked y/n as a challenge. She mastered the art of being an animagi along with James and Sirius in the fifth year. Indeed, it took three years for the three to master it, but they were all committed to do anything it takes for their friend, Remus.

    y/n still couldn't help but think about Remus asking her to the Yule Ball. Surely, it was an innocent question that brought up no follow-up questions on the spot, but y/n spent the entirety of last night thinking of what it meant- what they meant. And perhaps that was the reason why she was running late to class. Her head was still filled with millions of thoughts as she quickly walked past the long corridor, until she spotted Sirius behind one of the pillars by the window. Thinking her friend was running late to class as well, she turned her feet to greet him- well, that was until she saw a silhouette of a girl standing beside him. Sirius Black? With a girl? She thought to herself. After all, it was a fact that Sirius was very well-talked about among the girls. With his dark, flowy locks and a rather nicely structured face, he did capture quite a few girls' hearts. Nevertheless Sirius seemed to show no interest in girls, seeing that despite his chances with literally every single girl in Hogwarts, he never came to have a relationship with one. Thus seeing him- alone, with a girl, was a very odd sight to y/n.

    Out of curiosity, y/n slowed her steps and quietly walked towards the opposite side of the pillar. She wasn't really the eavesdropping type, but something told her that she had to investigate.

    "I'm- truly sorry. Okay?" said Sirius's voice, in a rather hushed tone.

    "Bloody hell, Sirius. You're... you're a... one of a kind." came an irritated voice of a girl.

    "What do you mean?"

    "Who in Merlin's beard declines a proposal after saying yes?"

    Wait... what?

    "I just..." Sirius sighs. "To be honest with you, I wasn't interested in going to the Yule Ball with you at the first place, Donna."

    The girl is silent.

    "Fine, then." She says. "Goodbye, Sirius."

Y/n could hear Donna's angry footsteps as she started to walk towards the opposite direction. Before Sirius could turn around, y/n quickly pulled herself as far away from him as possible and started finding her way back to class. She didn't want an awkward conversation with Sirius about how she was eavesdropping on a conversation between him and a girl, after all. However, she still couldn't help but wonder many things- but first and foremost- why did Sirius lie about not having a date to the Yule Ball?

    By the time transfiguration rolled around, y/n was already drenched in boredom and was very lost in her thoughts which seemed like either or both of the two; Sirius and Remus.

    "Pssst!" A voice called from behind. y/n wasn't surprised to see James Potter throwing her a note on her desk. In fact, he often was one of the main reasons she was constantly distracted in class. Everyone knew that trouble had a way of following him- or it might've been the opposite way around. Y/n unfolded the poorly crumpled up note, as she read the following, 'did Remus finally do it?'

    she did assume that James was talking about Remus asking her to the Yule Ball, but decided to play it dumb. She flipped the paper around, and wrote; 'do what?'

    A response came flying in after a short while. 

    'You know what I'm talking about. Yule Ball???" it said. y/n turned her head around, now facing James, who was raising his eyebrows signaling for a reply.

'so?' he mouthed. y/n sighed at how un-oblivious James was, as she gave him a nod in response. A grin appeared across James's face, but not just a grin, but more of a that-son-of-a-bitch-finally-did-it smile.
