WIZARDS & WITCHES CALL THEM THE MAGICIANS, for lack of a better word to describe them. They are not muggles, not quite. They aren't wizards either, but half-way there after having walked the path of shadows and dark magic.

Professor Slughorn described them as muggles that, when discovering the wonders of magic, had sacrificed their souls to acquire some. They hadn't been able to do sorcery but in them was the hability to interact with menacing magical objects, they had cursed themselves to get the gift of power blossoming from their fingertips. Soon they had discovered the nature of the curse: they could do magic as long as it was dark magic, old and forbidden. The worst kind.

The magicians were an abomination against mother nature, they were dangerous and cursed. The wizards hunted them to extinction (or, at least, that's what the professor said).

Tom Riddle is twenty-one when he meets the last magician, Judith Vetusta, and the dark magic that blooms from her fingertips.
