My heart flutters in my chest as we run in the summer night. Stars speckle the night sky and illuminate our figures, hands intertwined. I can't help but laugh as he pulls me behind him, for he continues to breathlessly whisper "Hurry up!", or "C'mon, Y/N!". My right hand squeezes his, and my left holds my lilac skirt so we can run faster and faster through the warm wind.

I've lost track of how many times I've snuck out with Alexander, but I know it's a dangerous game, especially with my father being Alex's boss. Being a Washington has its perks, but I can hardly think about consequences or punishments when Alexander looks at me like that.

"You're going to get yourself killed, Y/N." Alexander and I sprint through the gardens of Rosemount Park so I can return home at exactly 3 A.M. Our out of breath chuckles and smiles make my stomach twist nervously and erupt with butterflies. I see my fathers large home in the distance of the hills, so I slow my pace with Alexander by my side.

"Sneaking out wasn't my idea." I tease Alexander with a deep breath, holding his warm left hand. His shoulders shake with an airy chuckle, which nearly sends my heart to beat a million miles an hour. I look up to my right and study his profile in the streetlight. A golden light is cast on his sharp features and kind smile. Not to mention his warm eyes which...well, I think I've never been in love with something more.

"Also, I think my father is the one who'll kill you, Alex." I grin up at him as he rubs my hand with the pad of his thumb.

"I don't care what your father thinks about us." His face dips down to meet my eye level. Just gazing into his mocha eyes sends me into a deeper state of love. I've known Alexander for more than a year now, and we've been sneaking around for months. I want nothing more than to spend my life with him, but I know how insane this would sound to my father.

"Right," I say with a tinge of sarcasm, "You don't care what George Washington thinks about you?" My fathers name is one of high regard, especially to Alex, so he cracks a small smile.

Alex stops in his tracks and pulls both my hands in his. His dark eyes shine like amber in the golden streetlights, "I said I don't care what he thinks about us. You know, Y/N, I plan on spending my life with you if you'll have me. Then, it won't be anymore individualistic ideals. It'll be us."

His words leave me completely speechless. We've been running around, hiding from my father, even sneaking kisses in the dinner hallways since springtime. Now to hear Alexander's plan straight from the man I love, the whole universe seems to align at that moment!

"Us?" My voice whispers in the night.

"Only and always us." Alexander shakes his head softly as bright smiles form on both of our faces. Our utter joy is mirrored between each other as Alex brings his hands to hold my face. With a gentle tuck of my hair, he leans in swiftly with a passionate kiss. My entire body melts into his, and just as it does every time he kisses me, I feel the love in my mind, body, and soul grow for him.

Alexander pulls away after a moment as I gaze up at his face. A soft smile grows on my face and goosebumps break out on my skin while his hands trail their way down my arms and to my hands again. His dark eyes dart all over my face while I study our hands intertwined. When I glance back up at him, he says two words that make my heart drop.

"Marry me."

Wait.

What?

"Marry you?" I breathe out with surprise, my brows furrowing with sudden confusion.

I never thought he'd begin our lives now. I always knew he was a brave and courageous man, but I still live in hesitation over my father.

"Yes, Y/N. Will you marry me?" Alexander tilts his head and gazes longingly into his eyes.
