"And that would be because..?" Ymir asked in response to Levi's question, trying to keep her cool. She had had enough of people telling her that she couldn't see Historia, so he'd better have a decent reason as to why she couldn't.
"Because of her royal blood." Levi said simply, getting up from his seat and walking over to the Commander's desk. He opened a draw, gaining an 'Are you meant to be doing that?' look from Ymir, but he took something out of it regardless. Ymir's mind was going crazy with thoughts.
What does her royal blood have to do with anything?
"I presume the others have told you already about the mission to recover Eren and Historia from her father, Rod Reiss?" Levi sat back down as Ymir gave him a nod in response. "Did they tell you why he wanted her?"
"No." Ymir said, intrigued.
"Here. I can't be asked to explain it all to you, so read this report. It was given to Erwin in privacy by Historia herself." He handed Ymir a folder containing many sheets of paper and a few photos of Historia and, presumably, Rod Reiss.
"Then how do you know about it?" Ymir asked, staring for a long time into Historia's ocean blue eyes in the photos.
"Because Erwin shared it with us veterans. He said it was important." Levi recalled, gesturing for Ymir to get reading. When her eyes eventually stopped scanning over the sheets of paper, Ymir set them down on the desk and shrugged.
"So? According to this, Historia found out that Eren has the Founding Titan. Bertholdt and Reiner have no use for her as long as he has it."
"You misunderstand." Levi sighed, collecting up the papers and walking to put them back in the draw. "If Bertholdt and Reiner were to show up in this mission to retake Wall Maria and kill us all, taking back the Founding Titan for themselves, they would head straight to the capital to find you and Historia. They would kill you and take back your Titan, and then force Historia to take hold of the Founding Titan so that it could be used to its full potential. They might even force her to bare children so that they can eventually inherent the Founding Titan. Is that really something you would want for her?"Ymir's sharp intake of breath and the realisation that lay on her face confirmed for Levi that she hadn't thought about that possibility, and that she would absolutely hate for it to happen. He stared at her coldly from the other side of the desk.
"If the answer to my question is no, like I think it is, then you know you can't go and see her. Not until all our threats have been eliminated." He walked out of the room without saying another word, Ymir still worried about the situation Historia could be put in if she decided to act selfishly. Her mind wandered elsewhere, and she began to recall her time in the cadet corps with Historia and the others. Aside from the commandant yelling orders, most days were peaceful, yet full of gruelling training. There were calm nights spent in the cabins with the other girls, who told thrilling stories of escaping villages and seeing titans eat people first hand, though none of them really entertained Ymir.
Historia's personality and golden heart enticed Ymir into eventually making friends with the girl, despite not usually liking people as good natured as her. She would always invite Ymir to play games or tell stories, and even though she had no stories to tell or had no interest in playing games, she would always join in.
"What happened to those times, huh?" Ymir whispered aloud, smiling for some reason she couldn't explain. The only clear thought in her mind as she sat in the empty office of the commander was that she longed for life to be as it was a few months ago. Just her and Historia.
