It was Saturday night, which meant that it was time for another show. Renée wasn't feeling well, but she wanted to work through it. Plus she only had one sketch and John Krasinski was hosting.
At the time, no one knew that she was pregnant except for Pete, Marc, her in-laws, and Lorne. She hoped that Colson wouldn't start to suspect anything, but they were best friends. Pete would've spilled the beans to him if he had the opportunity.
Renée's pain got worse as they taped the episode. She barely made it through her sketch, but the pain kept her from breaking character. Shortly after the goodbyes, she told Pete that she had to pee and ran to her dressing room.
The pain that she was in was worse than period cramps and it was a big sign that something wasn't right. She almost threw up from the shock of seeing her blood in the toilet when she got up. With anxiety coursing through her veins, she called Pete.
"Hey, where are you?" She asked.
"In Colson's dressing room. You good?"
"I need you to get to my dressing room right now. Something happened and I don't know what to do. I think I just had a miscarriage."
Megan saw the color drain from Pete's face before hearing him mumble something about Renée. He ran out of Colson's dressing room, and the couple followed him to see what was going on. When Pete opened the door to Renée's bathroom, he was almost crying and Renée was in tears.
"Um, can you and Megan get in here?" Renée asked. Pete nodded his head and motioned for Megan to follow him. Colson sat on the couch and looked around as the door to the bathroom was closed. He nearly jumped up as the door swung open and Megan was saying something about getting a tampon.
"What's going on with Renée? Is she okay?" He asked.
"Don't worry about it."
Pete had to get out of the bathroom. Renée understood, and he left her with Megan. She cried harder as she couldn't get the tampon in.
"Hey, it's okay. What's the passcode to your phone? I can text Kate for you."
Renée told Megan the passcode to her phone, 8-15-89, the day that her parents got married, and it didn't take long for Cecily to walk in with a pad. The girls weren't even thinking about what would have been going through Pete's head, but when he saw the pad, his heart sank. Renée always used tampons.
Megan walked out of the bathroom and told them that Renée was doing okay, but Pete wanted to see her. She was washing her hands when he walked in, and that made more years stream down her face.
"I'm so sorry," she kept saying. Pete gave her a hug and let her cry into his chest.
Colson stood up when they walked out of the bathroom, and he rushed over to Renée and gave her a hug. Megan told him what was going on because he wanted to know, and he was really upset that this was happening to Renée of all people. She had been through enough loss.
"I'll pull the car up. You guys go to the after party and have fun. We'll let you know how things go," Pete told Colson and Megan.
They left Renée alone for a few minutes and all she did was sob. The knock on the door was what made her quiet down. She went to open it and Cecily was standing there.
"Are you okay?" She asked. Renée shook her head no and Cecily didn't ask any questions. Pete returned and got everything together before they left through a back door. She wouldn't have been surprised if Pete started speeding to the hospital.
When they reached the reception and explained what was going on, they were almost immediately rushed to a room. The ER nurse took some of Renée's blood before an OBGYN walked in and pulled up her chart.
"We ran some tests and it looks like you're about 5 weeks along. I can't detect the pregnancy on an ultrasound but it looks like you've had a miscarriage. Your hormones are low. Since it was so early in the pregnancy, you should be able to pass the tissue in about a week but come back if you notice extreme bleeding."
Renée was trying to hold back tears.
"Um, okay. Was it anything that we did wrong? Could we try to have kids again?"
"You didn't do anything wrong. You could start trying again in about a month. Is there a history of miscarriage in your family?"
"No, not that I know of."
"Then you should be able to conceive. It doesn't look like you have a history of reproductive issues so there shouldn't be any problems. When did you go off of your birth control?"
"November."
"Well, it looks like everything is normal. I recommend scheduling a follow-up with your OB. Other than that, you can go."
"Thank you."
They left the hospital and Renée sat in the car in silence. The house was quiet when they got home, which made things more difficult. They would have to tell Pete's mom about it in the morning and that isn't exactly news you want to wake up to. They were both upset, and that made Renée feel less alone.
"I still love you," Pete said. The words made Renée cry more. She admitted to being in denial of the whole thing because she didn't want to accept it.
Breaking the news to family was really difficult. Marc and Amy seemed the most upset out of everyone that they had told, and it made Renée and Pete more upset. She got a few weeks off of work for medical reasons, and most of that was spent at Marc's apartment when Pete wasn't home.
For the second time in her life, the last thing that she wanted was to be alone.
