I sulked into the kitchen with music blaring in my ears, not even bothering to glance around to see who else was in the room. Grabbing a water from the fridge, I forcefully pushed the fridge shut with my knee. When I turned to leave the kitchen, I was stopped by a body stepping into my path. Glancing up, I came face to face with a worried Lucien and tried to step around him, but he moved to block me again. I plucked the AirPods from my ears with a sigh of aggravation and gave him a questioning look.

"What?" I mumbled with attitude.

"You plan on telling me what's going on yet? You've been acting like this for days. Talk to me, AJ," he implored.

With a quick shake of my head, I tried to step around him again, only to be stopped in my tracks at the sound of River's contemptuous voice.

"Yeah, what's your problem? You're even less tolerable to be around than usual. Boy problems?" She asked with a nasty smirk. "Did that cute boy toy finally drop you?"

With those simple words, my control snapped without warning. Before anyone even realized that the sudden tension in the air was screaming 'danger,' I had dropped the water bottle, and I had River pinned to the wall of the kitchen with a hand wrapped around her throat.

I felt Lucien grab for my shoulder, but I used my magic to shove him back against the counter and hold him there, my eyes never leaving River's. I knew what she was seeing as she stared back into my own eyes.

When I released my hold on my magic, my eyes took on a strange otherworldly glow that was slightly unnerving. Even my parents and Lucien had always found it a little creepy, saying it was almost like they could see the power within me shining in my eyes. They always claimed the sight sent a shiver of unease down their spine as their instincts screamed out a warning.

Before River could react to the sight, the backdoor swung open, hitting the wall beside River with enough force to shake the entire wall. A strong wind began to blow through the room, and I smirked when River shivered in fear.

As I leaned my face closer to River's, the lightbulbs above us shattered, showering us all with broken glass. I vaguely heard yelling around me, but I paid it no mind, intently focused on my goal of putting River in her place without losing complete control and actually doing any real damage.

River's eyes widened comically, and I leaned closer still, not stopping until my nose was grazing hers.

"Back off, River," I said menacingly, releasing her throat with a little shove, slamming the back of her head into the wall. Spinning on my heel, I walked towards the kitchen door without another word. Nothing else was needed. That one simple sentence encompassed everything I needed from her.

River dropped to her butt on the floor, coughing violently while I got a tight grip on my magic once again, and the kitchen fell into complete silence.
