As Jacob left, the bell signaling for the school day to begin rang. I adjusted my bag and turned on my heel, stomping out of the parking lot. Edward was quick to follow, his siblings going at a slower pace.

"Bonnie," Edward said, easily falling into step next to me.

"Bonnie, I'm sorry things got ugly out there. You shouldn't have to worry about things like that."

I stopped at the front doors to the school and looked up at Edward. "I shouldn't have to worry about if my boyfriend and bestfriend are going to murder each other over something that happened a long time ago? I shouldn't worry about you hurting me and breaking my heart, or whether Jacob is going to go crazy every time he sees you? What should I be worrying about then, hm? My junior year at this stupid high school in a town that's not even on the fucking map?" My voice rose and a few students looked at us but I didn't care.

"Literally, what the fuck happened? Why do you both hate each other?"

Edward pulled me to the side and looked down at me.

"You're upset, and you have every right to be. I'm sorry for losing my temper like that in front of you. Jacob is a good friend to you and I'm glad that he's looking out for you, but you know I would never do anything to hurt you, Bonnie."

I folded my arms over my chest. "How do I know that? What are you hiding from me?"

"I can't get into it. I don't want you to think of me differently for mistakes I've made in the past, but I do need you to know that I've changed. I'm not the same person I was back then. All I can say is I did something that ended up hurting someone Jacob cared about. He's never forgiven me for that. But with you, it's different. Everything's different."

"I just want honesty, Edward." I broke our gaze and looked down at my shoes.

I just need to know that everything will be okay.

Edward quickly cupped my face with his cold hands, and forced me to look up at him. The pain in his eyes was clear.

"Bonnibel," he whispered. "I'm so sorry for putting you in the middle of this. I never wanted that. The history that Jacob and I share has nothing to do with you, and it wasn't fair that we both got you involved. I'm sorry."

I stepped back from the vampire. "Look, class is starting soon. I gotta go."

He wanted to say more but remained silent. I walked past him into the school building.

Upon entering Forks High I immediately spotted my two best friends, Carnation and Juniper Gilbert. They waved to me and I walked across the hall to join them.

"Hey Bonnie," Carnation said, wasting no time to give me a tight hug.

Juniper smiled to me kindly.

"Hey guys, how was your summer?" I asked. The twin sisters were fortunate enough to have family outside of our small town that they would regularly visit during summer vacation. Every year they would travel across the country to visit different relatives or go on expensive cruises. I envied them for their freedom to travel anywhere they wanted. My family had given up everything to move to Forks. It seemed as though we would never pack up and leave.

"Oh, it was fantastic. We went on a two week tour of Europe; Italy was absolutely to die for," Carnation said. Her blue eyes were bright as she spoke. "And after that we stayed in Hawaii with some distant aunt. As you can tell, we got a significant tan!"

Juniper looked at her sister and rolled her eyes. "More like a significant burn. Carnation fell asleep on the beach. She couldn't move for like, three days."

Carnation glared at Juniper. "I thought we agreed that would stay between us!"

Juniper smirked. "Oops."

I chuckled. Despite the jealousy I had for the Gilbert sisters' luxury life, they were good friends that could always make me laugh.

"How was your summer, Bonnie?" Juniper asked me.

I shrugged. "The usual, I guess. I just hung out with Benny and Jacob at La Push."

At the mention of Jacob, Carnation blushed. She had a crush on Jacob since she had first laid eyes on him two years ago. One day in the middle of the school year Jacob had come to pick me up from Forks High. Carnation had stared at him for all but a minute, and had fallen head over heels for the werewolf.

"God, what a man," she said. "I swear, this is the year. I'm finally going to ask him out on a date!"

"You say that every year. You haven't even talked to him, like...ever," Juniper pointed out but Carnation wasn't listening.

"Bonnie!" Carnation said, and she took my hands into her own. "Please, please, you have to introduce us! I know he's like your friend and all, but I really think I have a shot! Come on! I just need him to know who I am. I can work my magic from there."

I smiled and nodded. "Anything for you, Carnation."

The bell rang through the halls and the students of Forks High began to make their way to their first period classes.

"We'll talk later at lunch, okay? Have a good day, guys."

We parted and for the first time in months I was glad that my only worries would be school work and tests.
