The smell of pancakes wafted through the door,  waking up Celestia from her sleep. Her nose twitched as she straightened up, the sheets falling and curving around her body. For once, she'd slept well, the nightmares she'd grappled with of blazing fire and screaming sirens finally leaving her be.
"Sayaka?" She whispered into the half-light. A thin band of light traced through the curtains. Most days she didn't bother opening them- what was the point of staring into destruction and death when she could look at the beautiful ivy lace curtains, that has only cost a few pennies from a thrift shop.
The space where her partner slept was cold, her slippers gone from there home slung next to the bed. Curiously, Celeste pulled on her dressing gown and pawed downstairs.
She always stopped to proudly stare at the picture on the landing. The apartment she, Sayaka and their adopted daughter Monaca shared was minute, but they had repainted and redecorated the entire space, buying new curtains and new pictures. The picture of the landing was one Monaca had found on a street corner- it showed three figures sailing on a gleaming ocean, surrounded by glossy greenery. It was Celeste's new dream- one day, in this broken world, Celestia Ludenburg and her family would do this very thing in a world of hope.
Celestia walked into the kitchen, the smell of pancakes even stronger.
"SURPRISE!"
"Sayaka! Monaca!"
The dining table was covered in pancakes and balloons, all scribbled with smiley faces. Her girlfriend and her daughter ran and hugged her, squealing.
"We made loads of pancakes!" Monaca chirped like a songbird.
"Do you like it, Celes?" Sayaka beamed.
Celestia grabbed Sayaka's hands. She laid a kiss on her forehead.
"What did I do to deserve a girlfriend like you?" She giggled.
