Climbing the stairs to the attic of the pro-bending arena, Mayalean was overwhelmed with a sense of home— a sense of belonging.

She had only been away at the South Pole for one day, but it seemed like far too long to be away from her closest friends, or, more accurately, her only friends in Republic City.

It was difficult telling half-truths to her father. Of course her family knew who her friends were, or had at least heard about them, because Spirits know she's been friends with them for years, but she couldn't exactly tell them everything.

For starters, Mako and Bolin got into it with the Triple Threats a few times when they were younger boys— Mako even learned how to bend from Lightning Bolt Zolt. And if her father knew she was around that back then, especially being a councilman, she would have never been allowed to leave the island again.

Secondly, they were pro-benders. Now, this notion wasn't so bad. Of course, Mayalean knew what Tenzin thought about the sport: how it was a, "mockery to the art of bending," but he allowed her to spend time with her friends as long as she never stepped foot into the arena.

Now that was where the lies began to build, the biggest issue being— Mako and Bolin lived above the arena.

But true to her word, she never stepped foot into the arena; only riding her air scooter, sitting on a railing or gliding through the practice room. And when her feet were planted on the ground, she was in the apartment above the arena. So technically, she had not disobeyed any of her father's wishes.

Opening the door with a gust of wind, she smiled brightly at the older brother who was planted on the couch, rubbing his temples in disdain.

"Your savior is here," she chimed happily, twirling around as if she were on a stage with a large crowd. Though he was amused with her beaming personality, he was far to distraught at his current circumstance to feed into it.

"Ugh," he groans. "I can feel your enthusiasm from here. Put a lid on it."

Mayalean just shook her head, "Mako! I haven't seen you in forever," the girl happily lands on the couch.

Mako looked at her confused, "I saw you the other day," he pointed out, leaning back into the worn out fabric of the cushion.

Rolling her eyes, her bright grin never dimmed from her face. "You know what they say," she crossed her legs into the lotus position. "Time moves differently in the South Pole."
