Miranda clicked her teeth as she talked to Richard. She was waiting 3 more weeks and she didn’t understand what they didn’t get.
Miranda turned in the bed with her back to the door. She didn’t want anymore visitors, she was tired of talking. When she heard a knock on the door she groaned.
“I don’t want any visitors right now.” Miranda scolded.
“Bailey is this how you treat your guest who came all the way from across the country chasing tail, how you put it, to see you.” Callie asked fake hurt.
“Torres.” Miranda cheered.
“Oh I missed you.” Callie stated sitting on the bed.
“ I missed you too, what are you doing here?” Miranda questioned still smiling.
“Never mind that Miranda your eyes. Your liver.” Callie said concerned.
“I keep trying to tell everyone I’m fine.” Miranda mumbled.
“ But you are not. Miranda I think you should get the surgery and deliver your baby.” Callie insisted.
“I just need 3 more weeks.”
“Miranda you don’t have 3 more weeks, you could die and your baby, or you die and the baby lives. Why.”
Miranda stayed silent.
“What are you afraid of Bailey. In all of the time I was gone you really have changed. I never knew you to not jump at a challenge. You are a wimp.” Callie ranted.
“Watch yourself Torres.” Miranda sneered.
“No seriously Miranda what are you scared of. I know you. You are talking to someone who got into a car accident and almost died while pregnant. My baby was so premature, she almost died but she didn’t and I didn’t we are BOTH here.”
Callie took out her phone and showed Miranda a picture. “You remember this, this was Sofia when she was born.” Miranda stared at the picture for a while.
“Now look at Sofia. That’s going to be your baby.” Callie bragged.
“But look at these.” Callie said flipping through.
“You see all of these pictures….I am there, I’m either taking them or are in them.”
“Miranda don’t you want to be in the picture? You didn’t come this far to not be in the picture. This is your baby. Your baby with the man you love more than anything, from a love so powerful. You don’t want to miss that. You need to take part of that and be in it.” Callie demanded.
Miranda sat for a minute and she thought and pondered. “Okay.” Miranda agreed.
“Okay?” Callie repeated
“We can deliver.” Miranda gave in.
“Okay great so Arizona flew in with me and we are going to put a team together to do this.”
“Alex and Arizona will work on the baby. Carina can perform the cesarean and then Meredith and Dr. Webber can perform your liver repair.” Callie listed out every one and Miranda nodded her head.
“Thank you.” Callie said hugging Miranda.
“Hey baby.” Ben said walking into the room and then he smiled at Callie.
“Callie.” Ben said giving her a side hug.
“Alright, so we should plan for the surgery, the day after tomorrow.”
“Okay great.” Miranda said smiling.
“The surgery?” “Miranda you agreed.” Ben asked smiling.
“Yeah babe it’s time.” Miranda said
Ben put his hands on both sides of her face and kissed her lips.
“Thank you Miranda.”
Miranda was extremely nervous about the surgery. She prayed about it and asked that everything goes well. Miranda talked to all of her children and spent time with them yesterday. Ben stayed by her side every minute and he calmed her with his presence.
“Ben.” Miranda spoke softly.
It was early in the morning and he was in her neck.
“You okay?” Ben asked instantly and Miranda slowly turned in his arms to face him.
“I’m okay…. I just wanted to tell you that we have been thinking of names and I like the name Natalie.” Miranda said softly.
“Natalie.” Ben repeated and then a smile formed on his face.
“It’s beautiful I love it.” Ben stated kissing her forehead and then her nose before he reached her lips.
Miranda signed all of her paperwork and she handed it to Richard. “Alright we are going to prep you for surgery.” Callie said coming into the room.
“Okay I’m ready. Ben put on your scrubs.” Miranda insisted.
Miranda laid back on the operating table. She had the oxygen tube in her nose and was already numb from the stomach down. Ben stood by her side holding her hand.
“Okay scalpel.” Carina said as she cut into Miranda’s stomach.
“Ahhh.” Miranda said causing everyone to jerk and Ben to snapped his head towards Carina.
Miranda laughed. “It was just a joke, I’m okay, I didn’t feel anything.”
Miranda continued chuckling.
“That’s not funny Miranda.” Ben chastised.
“I’m sorry honey but your face was.” Miranda chuckled and whined slightly.
Ben looked from Miranda to her stomach continuously. He noticed all the blood. He knew that was going to happen but he was grateful that they had a handle on it. After 15 minutes, Carina reached her hand in side Miranda’s womb and she pulled out their baby. Miranda kept trying to sit up to see and Ben stared at the tiny human.
“Is she okay.” Miranda asked worried out of her mind. You could hear her heart rate go up as it sounded through the monitor.
“She is fine Miranda they are giving her oxygen.” Ben assured her as he watched Alex wrap her up in a blanket.
“Let me see her.” Miranda insisted.
“Don’t just walk out of the room with her.” Miranda said
And Richard nodded to Arizona.
“Here she is Bailey.” Arizona said walking over to Miranda and Ben.
Miranda gasped looking at her, she was so small probably only a pound.
“Natalie.” Miranda said softly as Ben squeezed her hand. She was very precious.
“Okay Dr. Bailey we really need to get her down to the NICU. “ Arizona said and Miranda nodded.
“Go with her Ben.” Miranda said looking at him with her Bailey eyes.
“Miranda” Ben started.
“Ben I am fine, I will be here waiting for you when I’m finished. Plus you can’t be in here while they do my surgery anyway.” Miranda said and Ben blew out a breath.
“Okay, I love you so much.” Ben said kissing her.
“I love you too, I’ll see you in a bit.” Miranda said pecking his lips.
“You ready.” Knox asked as he grabbed the mask to give her anesthetics for the surgery.
Ben walked down to the NICU.
“Warren, she’s over here… She is doing so great. She is 465 grams which is a little over a pound and she is 12 inches long.
Ben smiled. He was happy that she was doing well. Ben looked down at her and looked inside the incubator. He looked at the chest leads and monitors on her. She had a small feeding tube and an iv for medicine and fluids. Ben checked her monitors looking at her stats and she was strong everything was good. This was the strongest premi he had ever saw.
“You may be able to hold her in a few hours. We just want to make sure she stays stable for a while. Sometimes touch can frighten premies.” Arizona said and Ben nodded he already knew that.
Ben sat in the chair and he just stared. He felt joy and pride just looking at his baby another little girl. He already knew she was going to be so spoiled because she had already consumed his heart.
After sitting for about two hours Ben went back to find Miranda’s recovery room.
“She should have been up by now.” Ben heard Richard say as he burst through the door.
“What?” Ben asked.
“During the surgery Miranda’s blood pressure shot up and her heart started to slow down and suddenly stopped. We used the defibrillators to bring her back and set her heart on the correct rhythm.”
“Knox lightened her up during surgery, so the Anesthesia should have worn off by now but she’s not up.”
“Her body is just tired.” Callie chimed in.
“She hasn’t responded to pain, light, or sound in the usual way, and she isn’t making voluntary actions. We paged shepherd for a consult.” Meredith informed and Ben just stared at his wife in the bed.
The next day Ben was leaving the nursery to go sit with Miranda. He spent his time between both places.
“Dr. Bailey’s blood pressure was extremely high. This happens after post delivery but because she was already in surgery. It was a lot on her body. She is in a comatose state. Her consult with Shepherd checks out. Her brain activity is fine.”
“She can still hear and understand in this state. We are going to start stimulating her senses of touch, smell, sound, and vision and this may help Dr. Bailey’s recovery. “
“So tomorrow when you come after you visit the baby. Could you spray on the cologne that you wear. That way it can reach her nose. “ Meredith asked and Ben nodded.
He wanted her to wake up more than anything. This was his whole life laying in this bed and he missed her like crazy and it’s only been 21 hours with out her.
Ben sat down in the chair and turned to face her. “Miranda you got to wake up. I know you are tired but I need you and our daughter, Her tiny hand, she wrapped it around my finger and held it. She is so precious Miranda. We never talked about a middle name so I gave her yours. Natalie Miranda Warren. She is strong like you.” Ben told her.
“The kids are doing fine. I know that they are worried out of their minds. Tuck went with Tucker this weekend…he came by to pick him up. He always has a major attitude though. It’s like he hates the fact that we are married.” Ben talked and explained.
“Nicole has this project on the human brain that I have been helping her with. Its actually pretty cool, she wants to come see you so I told her she could tomorrow after school.”
“I’ve also updated your parents and they are doing good. Your mother said that she has the whole church praying for you.” Ben chuckled.
After a while Ben stopped talking and just held her hand.
The next day Nicole sat in the chair beside Miranda’s bed and she looked over at her.
“So Brandon asked me to be his girlfriend and I told him I would think about it but I want to hear your opinion on it. I wish you would tell me what you think. I didn’t want to ask dad because…. Well you know he’s dad.” Nicole said smiling.
“Man I wish I could hear you talk back.” Nicole said sitting playing with her hands.
“Hey.” Ben said walking into the room.
“Hey daddy.” Nicole said looking up at him.
“Do you want to go see your sister.” Ben asked smiling.
“Yeah I really do.” Nicole beamed and Ben grabbed her hand pulling her up.
“Come.”
A week went by and Ben still did the same routine, he spent time with the baby for hours in the morning then all after noon he sat with Miranda. He went home cook dinner for the evening and stayed with the kids and then went back to the hospital in the morning.
It was evening yet again and Ben sat with Miranda. He brushed her hair and kept her body cleaned and lotion. He didn’t care for the nurses doing that.
“Natalie only has to do 3 months hospital stay instead of four. She is a champion.” Ben cheered.
“I miss you Miranda.” Ben sighed holding her hand.
He hated this, they told him it could be days, weeks and months.
Some days he was angry at Miranda herself for waiting too long.
“You know the times I wanted you to be silent was during our arguments but geesh I wouldn’t care if you fussed me out now. I would love to see how you wrinkle and scrunch up your cute nose and then you take your tongue and hold it against your teeth, trying to calm down and man those eyes. When you give me your eyes big and wide like someone stomped on your heart. Your hands flying around as you talked while you storm around.”
“And depending on how mad I was, I would bite my lip to keep from smiling as my eyes traveled down your body, which to this day is still out of this world and I can’t believe my luck." Ben talked and after a while tears began to water in his eyes. He was tired of looking and not being looked at, talking but not being talked too.
He let the tears fall as he stared longingly. Ben was sniffling as his head was down looking at her hand that he placed in his.
“Ben honey what’s wrong.” Miranda asked sleepily but alert to him. One thing that always got to her was his tears. He pulled at her heart strings every time and those sad beautiful eyes did a number on her in their angry and sad situations
“Miranda!” Ben rejoiced.
“Yes honey why are you yelling? and what’s the matter? Why are you crying?” Miranda asked concerned.
“Hold on let me page Meredith and Webber.” Ben said.
“Miranda you were in a coma.” Ben said staring at her and immediately Miranda reached her hand down to her stomach.
“The baby.” Miranda gasped.
“You were talking to me Ben. You said she squeezed your finger. Aww how is she? How long was I out?” Miranda asked question after question.
Ben still had tears in his eyes as he looked at Miranda. “Baby I’m okay.” Miranda assured him.
Ben leaned down to kissed Miranda and she backed up.
“Why’d you back up.” Ben asked confused.
“Because my mouth has been closed for quite sometime and I want to brush my teeth.” Miranda laughed.
Ben clicked his teeth and pecked her lips anyway.
After everyone came into the room and talked and checked Miranda out. Ben and Miranda held hands and Ben wouldn’t stop staring.
“I want to see Natalie.”
“Miranda you just woke-“ Richard.
“Take me to see my baby.” Miranda demanded. Its been a week. I’m sure I can walk.” Miranda huffed.
Ben agreed, he knew there was no stopping her. She normally would have been home 3 days after a cesarean anyway.
Ben walked with Miranda carefully up to the NICU nursery. He wanted to wheel her but she wasn’t having it.
Miranda sanitized her hands and she put the pink gown and Ben did the same.
“Here she is.” Ben said walking over to her incubator.
Ben lifted the top and smiled. He carefully picked her up as he previously done everyday this week.
He placed her into Miranda’s arms. “Here is mommy. Natalie.” Ben smiled speaking softly.
“Oh gosh.” She is so beautiful and so small.
“But so strong. Natalie Miranda Warren.” Ben cheesed.
“Ohhh Natalie Miranda.” Miranda awed.
“Thank you Ben I love it.” Miranda said crying and Ben wrapped his arms around his wife and kissed her forehead as they looked down at their baby girl.
