Stranger Things

Do you know what The Stranger byAlbert Camus, Slaughterhoue-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, The Metamorphosisby Franz Kafka, and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett all have incommon? They're all examples of absurdist fiction.

When it comes to literature, absurdism is a genre that typically portrays characters trying –and failing —to find purpose and meaning in life. A lot of whatoccurs in the story feels slightly redundant or nonsensical, and itoften incorporates satire and humor.

Our challenge to you is to write ashort story that feels absurd – whether that's because the eventsthat take place seem highly unlikely, because the reader is neverquite sure what's going on, or because, in the style of Camus, itreflects upon the meaning (or lack thereof) of life.

1. Write a story about a charactertrying to determine whether life has meaning or reason.

2. Write a story about a characterwho can't figure out when they're dreaming or awake.

3. Write a story about a clubdevoted entirely to predicting the future.

4. Write a story about a characteror group of characters who are waiting for something. Leave itunclear who or what they are waiting for.

5. Write a story about a characterthat is certain the world is going to end today.
