Once Upon a Time

As a structural element, expositionis the first stage of a story where important details are establishedfor a reader. In a novel, an author can take time with exposition, setting the stage slowly. In a short story, exposition has to happenmuch more quickly, as writers have less time to get readersacquainted with the story's background.

This week, we're challenging youto write a story that begins with one of the five following types ofexposition:

1. Write a story that sets thestage through dialogue between two or more characters.

2. Write a story that sets thestage through narrations.

3. Write a story that sets thestage through a character's internal monologue.

4. Write a story that sets thestage through a newspaper clipping.

5. Write a story that sets thestage through letters between two people.
