"Hello??"

Oliver's confusion and exhaustion was clear as he mumbled the greeting. The voice on the other end belonged to someone he used to love. Klementine. He'd never forgotten that name. No matter how much he wanted to, he just couldn't let go. It was stupid, really. He was the one that ended things in the first place. How did he have the right to feel upset about the breakup? Despite this, he couldn't help the sudden rush of happiness he felt when he saw her name on his screen. Hearing her voice made him long for the time they spent together.

"Oliver?" Klementine said.

She was crying; the cracking of her voice made it obvious. It was 3:00 a.m. She knew she shouldn't have called him but she couldn't help it.

"Klementine??"

They still knew each other's voices inside and out, but neither of them really believed they were talking to each other. After all, it had been a year since they last spoke, if you could call it that. Truly, their last conversation was less speaking and more yelling.

"Hey.." Klementine said, the word hanging in the air. Honestly, she didn't know what else to say. She didn't want to tell him the reason that she'd called but she needed to hear his voice at least one more time.

"Klementine, why did you call?" He sounded mad, but Oliver wasn't angry that she'd called. Hearing her voice just made him feel a certain type of misery he had never experienced before.

Klementine sighed at the question. She still thought he wanted nothing to do with her. He would probably laugh at her and hang up the phone when she told him the answer.

"Do you remember that song we listened to when we were up at 2:00 in the morning making cookies?" she questioned, hoping he would know what she was talking about.

"We danced to it that night and ever since then after we listened to it, it became our song?" Klementine continued, in spite of herself. Her cracking voice was accompanied by a steady stream of tears flowing down her face. She thought that was all the more reason for him to hang up on her.

But he didn't. Instead he tried to steady his own uneven breath and said

"Yeah. Yeah, I remember."

Klementine was silent for a few moments before speaking the words she was trying to hold back

"I heard it on the radio and...." she took a pause before saying "well i just needed to hear your voice again."

Oliver was at a loss for words. He was really happy that she had remembered the song and thought of him, but he was plagued with guilt for the pain that he caused her. He didn't want to say the wrong thing, but what do you even say to that?

"I miss you," she said. Her voice was barely over a whisper, almost as if she didn't actually want him to hear it, but he did. Of course he did. At first he wasn't sure if she'd actually said it or if he'd imagined it, but he'd heard it nonetheless.

"I miss you too," Oliver finally said. He sounded broken, almost as broken as she was. Klementine let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. She felt less pathetic when he said those four words.

"What do we do now?" she questioned. She didn't actually know what she wanted him to say. She was scared of getting hurt again but she just wanted to be in his arms.

"Come home. Just—— please come home." he pleaded. This is what he'd wanted to tell her ever since he broke it off but he could never bring himself to say it.

In a moment, she was there. Knocking on his door. When the door opened, Oliver and Klementine froze. Neither of them blinked out of the fear that when they opened their eyes, the other would disappear. When reality set in, they kissed, but it was deeper than that. The kiss was a promise. A promise that no matter what happened, they would find their way back to each other.
