I sat on the couch, watching my favorite when my older siblings walked in.

"What's up?" I asked.

"It can't be happening." Kiki, the oldest, said, pacing. She was 17, so she is three years older.

"What can't be happening?" I asked, being the youngest, no one answered.

"She said she wouldn't, she would never, right?" Peyton, the oldest brother asked. He is 16.

"I doubt she would." Joni, my brother, said. Who is also 16.

"What?" I yelled.

"Mom!" Kiki yelled.

I looked at see Mom, walking down the stairs with a suitcase and her new dress on along with a big jacket on.

"I'm sorry, kids. I got to go." Mom said, smiling at us.

"Where you going?" I asked, looking at her with big eyes.

"Away. I'll be back." Mom said, kissing my forehead and hugging me.

I hugged her, breathing in her scent of strawberries and vanilla. She hugged everyone and walked to the door.

"Bye, I love y'all." Mom said.

"We love you too." Kiki said as we waved her away.

"Mommy." I said. But she had already gone. Something felt wrong.

"Dad's jacket." Joni whispered.

I stared at the door, blinking. I was hoping it was a dream. She didn't say anything different. Just like she did when she went to the store.

Yeah, we may all be adopted, but she treats us better than anyone else. She did the same thing everytime she left.

Then why does it feel so off?

"She was wearing Dad's jacket." Joni said, barely above a whisper.

"Yeah, so?" I asked.

"She's gone." Peyton said.

"She's not coming back." Kiki said.

"Kiara, be quiet." Joni said, tilting his head toward me.

"Why won't y'all answer my questions, huh?" I asked.

"She was wearing Dad's jacket. She is not coming back." Peyton said.

"Don't say that." Joni said.

"We can do this by ourselves." Kiki said.

"DO WHAT? I can hear y'all! Don't pretend like I'm not here!" I yelled, getting their attention.

"Mom left." Kiki said.

"I know that!" I yelled.

"She's not coming back, Jay. Don't you get it? Of course, you don't. You're just a little kid." Peyton said.

He walked away and to his room. I sighed at him. He never liked me anyways, so I turned to Kiki and Joni.

"Jay, you were adopted 5 years ago, right?" Kiki asked.

"Yeah. When I was ten. The year after Dad died." I said.

"Mom was wearing Dad's jacket, she has had it hidden since Dad died." Joni said.

"Yeah, so?" I asked.

"She said she would only take out that jacket when it was time for her to leave us." Kiki said.

"No." I said.

"J-" Joni started.

"NO!" I yelled.

I covered my ears and broke down crying on the floor. My back against the couch, knees to my chest.

I cried so hard, I couldn't breath. When I looked up, Kiki and Joni were gone.

"This can't be happening!" I yelled at myself. More mad at myself.

"Mom wouldn't do this!" I yelled.

"NO!" I yelled. I looked at the door, staring at it for hours.

Mom would never...

I walked over to the door, looking out, hoping Mom would be standing there, looking back at me.

It was only darkness. I wiped away my tears, forcing a breath.

"Mommy." I whispered into the darkness.
