Elizabeth's POV:

I heard it again last night.

Singing coming from the ocean just beyond the clearing outside my village.

It keeps me up at night, i wish i knew who it was.

I've been hearing it for weeks.

Tonight is gonna be different.

I packed my supplies and climbed out my window.

I waited for the singing and once i heard it i followed the voice down to the shore.

"Hello?" I called out.

I stood on the dock, umbrella in hand, it was raining bad.

"Hello!?" I called out again.

Suddenly a bolt of lightning came down knocking me off my feet and into the water.

Any normal night, getting to land wouldn't be a problem.

But the storm was making the waves crazy and i got knocked back.

I was trying my best to hold my breath.

Suddenly the singing stopped and i got dragged up onto land.

I coughed a few times.

I blinked a few times before my eyes adjusted to the darkness.

I noticed i was on a large rock in the middle of the water.

I noticed a figure next to me.

A boy my age, with dark hair with a blue streak in it, blue eyes, and freckles, he had scales and a tail too.

Was he a mermaid!?

I backed away a little.

He had a sad expression on his face.

"You...saved me" i said.

He nodded.

"Why?" I asked.

He had a guilty look on his face.

"You were the one singing?" I asked.

He nodded again.

"My name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Ellie, what's your name?" I asked.

He pointed to himself and looked at me confused.

"Your name, what does everyone call you?" I asked.

"Varian" he said.

"Varian, i like it! Well, it's nice to meet you Varian!" I said, holding out my hand.

He looked at me confused.

I shook my hand a little.

He took my hand and his eyes lit up as he shook it violently.

I laughed a little.

"You know Varian, you're a really good singer" i said.

He jumped a little as his face turned red.

"Has nobody told you before?" I asked.

He shook his head.

Suddenly a wilted flower washed up on the rock.

Varian looked at it and got excited.

He picked it up and plucked one of the scales off his tail.

Suddenly it turned blue and he dropped it on the flower, making it seem like it never wilted to begin with.

The he put it in my hair and gave me a sweet smile.

"Pretty" he said.

"How do i get back to shore?" I asked.

He looked towards the shore and jumped a little.

He grabbed a conch shell and filled it with water.

Then he took another scale, this one turned teal.

He dropped it in the shell and acted like he was about to drink it before handing it to me.

I looked at him confused for a minute before drinking the water from the shell.

In a flash of smoke i suddenly had a tail too.

I went to put the shell down before he grabbed my arm and shook his head.

Varian pulled me into the water.

And to my suprise, i could breath as well as if i were on land.

We swam back to shore and he signaled me to drink from the shell again.

When i did, i had legs again.

I stood up.

"Bye Varian, i'll come back and visit soon" i said.

He nodded and jumped back into the water.

I smiled and walked home.
