There was a mostly empty plate in front of Dean, who was circling obituaries in a newspaper. Scarlet was halfway through her second plate of pancakes and whipped cream, Sam watched her with a smile.
Dean circled an obituary that read: CARLTON, SOPHIE - The Carlton family is sad to announce the death of their beloved daughter in a tragic swimming accident. Sophie Carlton, 18, was having her [...] Lake Manitoc, WI, an [...] suddenly [...]
Scarlet's eyes skimmed the article, slowing to read the part about how Sophie vanished mysteriously into the water, presumably drowned. She frowned as her eyes flicked back up to the beginning, searching for what she wanted. There: A member of a varsity swim team. Drowned?
An attractive waitress, whose nametag said WENDY, approached.
"Can I get you anything else?" Wendy asked the two.
Dean looked up and grinned around the pen he was chewing on.

Scarlet glanced up and quickly looked away from the tall blonde woman who smiled coyly at Dean. She already knew what was coming next, and the familiar knot tightened in her stomach.
