When you opened your eyes the next morning, it took you a minute to figure out where you were. The grey walls not registering in your brain. You heard footsteps approach the door and Emily opened the door, holding two cups of hot tea. She's still wearing the t-shirt she slept in, and threw her hair up in a messy bun.
"Oh, good, you're awake," she smiled. She stood on her knees on the bed, careful not to spill the scorching liquid.
"Wow, I could get used to this," you joked, making Emily chuckle, her cheeks turning a shade of pink. You sat up in bed and took one of the cups from her hands, thanking her. "How's your head?"
"I feel like I got hit by a truck, but I took some aspirin earlier, so I'll be fine." She had a small gauze pad taped to her forehead.
Rubbing your eyes with your free hand to get rid of your eye boogies, you took a sip of the tea and smiled. Just the right amount of sweetness. Some people thought you were crazy with the amount of sugar you put in your coffee or tea.
"Did I get it right?" she asked, and took a sip of her tea, sitting next to you with her back against the headboard.
You nodded. "You're really good at this profiling thing."
She playfully smacked your arm with the back of her hand. You laughed and took another sip.
"I'm sorry about last night," Emily said. "You said you wanted to talk, but we never did and ended up falling asleep."
You put your mug on the nightstand next to you and turned towards her, sitting with your legs criss crossed. "Don't apologize. You weren't feeling your best last night, and that's totally okay. Did you at least catch the bad guy?"
She smiled, then nodded her head. "Yeah, we did." She took a sip of her tea. "So, what did you want to talk about?"
"Work," you fiddled with your fingers, "And us. If there even is an us, and how I'm starting to feel a little anxious about tomorrow." Your eyes fell from hers, staring at your fingers.
Emily put her mug down on the nightstand on the other side of the bed. She grabbed your hands and pulled them into her lap. Using one of her hands, she lifted your chin and forced you to look at her. "You have absolutely nothing to worry about. The team is going to love you, except for, maybe, our technical analysis. She's usually iffy when it comes to change, but she'll come around, she always does."
"Are you sure?" you asked.
"Yeah, she probably has already done an extensive background search on you, just to be prepared."
Your eyes widened, "She what? Shit." Your heart raced and your hands became clammy at the thought of someone finding out your dark secret. You felt like the world stopped turning, and your skin went pale. No one is supposed to know.
Emily furrowed her brows at your sudden action. She placed a hand on your knee, "Are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost."
You got out of bed and threw your shirt over your shoulder. "She has no right. I have to go, I can't be here right now. I- I need..."
Emily got up and followed you. "Y/n wait ,where are you going? Can we talk about this?" Your eyes burned as your vision went blurry. You turned around as a tear fell down your cheek, knowing that once they started, you couldn't stop them.
