"boy what kind of caption is that?" i laughed as we sat on his couch.

"shut up." he started twisting a strand of my hair on his finger. "i like this shit you doin' witcho hair. this color changing shit."

"thank you." i smiled. "thanks for paying for my hair appointment too."

"it ain't no thang." he waved me off.

"i talked to spanky." i said.

he stopped twisting my hair and sat up, "and what happened?"

"i let him know that i'm safe. he wanted to know where i was at but i was scared to tell him that. it took a long time to reassure him i was okay though, he thought i was being held hostage and was forced to say that to him." i laughed.

"nigga so throwed off." kye chuckled.

"i wanna cook today. tired of eating out." i got up and walked to the kitchen.

"whatchu finna cook ma?" he followed behind me as i looked through the cabinets at all his food.

"whatchu got a taste for?" i turned around and leaned against the counter, looking at him.

"chicken alfredo." he licked his lips.

"fatty." i turned around and took the stuff out that was needed for the chicken alfredo.

"who taught you how to cook?" he asked me.

"i used to cook with my mom all the time." i told him, filling up a pot with water. "she taught me the basics. i learned everything else from youtube."

"your real mama or ms sherry?"

"my real mother. i don't call sherry my mom. she doesn't act like one. at least not to me." i mumbled the last part.

"she the reason you left huh?" he asked me, leaning against the counter with his arms crossed.

"it really was everybody, except brook and spanky." i told him.

"who's brook?" he asked.

"their little sister. shes 10. how do you know them and not her?"

"we was childhood friends. i left the neighborhood 11 years ago." he explained. "ms sherry must've gotten pregnant right after i left."

"i came here 11 years ago." i turned around and looked at him in astonishment, "in september."

"i left in late august." he said as my phone rang from the living room. "i'll get it."

he left out the kitchen and came back with my phone. i answered it, seeing it was a facetime call from spanky.

"hey." i sat my phone up against the wall and went back to cooking.

"nova you gotta tell me where you at so i can come pick you up. i want you to see my new crib." he cheesed.

"i can get dropped off. why you got that lil ass hat on?" i asked him.

"don't question my authority." he said.

"aight baby face." i chuckled.

"whatchu cooking?" he asked.

"chicken alfredo."

"what nigga got you in the kitchen?" he laughed.

"boy."

"brook wanna see you so bad. ion be knowing what to tell her." he frowned.

"i feel bad, she always texting me. it's been what? two weeks?" i asked.

"ion know." he shrugged. "everybody else ain't even phased by this shít no more. that shit sad, we been knowing you for a lil over a decade."

"ian trippin'." i said. "send me your address. i'm bringing you some of this alfredo when i finish it."

"ian even gon' lie. i thought this shit was finna be nasty." kaiser said as we sat on his couch eating our food.

i had wrapped some up to take to spanky in about an hour. "i'm not cooking for you again."

"my bad ma, i was just playing." he laughed.

"i wanna look for a job. i don't wanna take over your guest room for too long." i said while taking a scoop of my alfredo.

"i told you you good lil bit. why you keep rushing yourself?" he asked.

"i'm sorry." i mumbled. "i'm trying to stop, i really am. i just don't wanna run your pockets up for too long. i'm grown i should be making my own money."

"it's cool. you ain't hurting my pockets. whatever i spend, i make it right back. stop stressing yourself. ima help you get on your feet whether you like it or not. but you ain't gotta rush. i'm here for you as long as you need me to be." he said, causing a big smile to spread across my face.

"you finna make me cry, seriously."
