Chapter 1 - Wake Up Call

"...The Master Chief is dead." "His file reads missing in action." "Catherine, Spartans never die..." "...Do not underestimate them. But most of all, do not underestimate him."

Dr. Halsey's interrogation

"Humanity, a species that, no matter how many times they're threatened, seems to always come back from the brink of destruction stronger than before. It's amusing. Their future is locked behind doors which only certain keys can unlock. Throughout history those keys have shown up just in time for them to survive extinction. One key in particular has helped them pull through time and time again, more than they truly realise, but what can he truly do when time and history begin to shatter and he's is placed where nothing before him has been able to solve. Let's see if their beloved key can open a path for them, or will it break turning the lock."

"Alert, Alert, Alert." The ship's computer system continuously announces.

"What's this?" Cortana says as her hologram is projected above the pedestal where her A.I. chip is plugged in. She swipes her hand, pulling up the alert panel. "Breach in vehicle bay 11, but that's on the complete other side of the Dawn?" Her hologram disperses as she travels to vehicle bay 11, the farthest possible point from where the UNSC frigate was torn in two. She projects herself onto a different pedestal and examines the room. "Nothing? System must be malfunctioning again. At least that's something for me to fix la..." A new alert pops up in front of her announcing a new breach in the shooting range. Soon more and more alerts pop up. "What is going on with the systems." Soon she notices something very alarming. The walls of the vehicle bay slowly start bending and are then ripped apart being projected into the vacuum of deep space. "This is not good, very, very not good." Cortana heads to the observation deck to assess the situation and find the cause of this problem. "Okay let's see what we're up against." To her dismay there is absolutely nothing in the surrounding area. "Well this is great. the dawn is being torn apart and absolutely nothing is responsible. I need to wake up John." She heads back to cryo bay and pulls up the panel disabling the cryo cycle in Chiefs pod. "Chief, Chief, Chief wake up." As Chief regains consciousness, he is unfamiliar with his surroundings and reaches out only to hit the glass shield covering the pod. He soon realises where he is and disengages the manual lock on the pod allowing him to stand up

"Cortana why did you..."

"I'll explain later. Right now we need to get off the dawn." Chief grabs his A.R. and a DMR off the weapon rack beside the pod before pulling out Cortana's chip and plugging it into his helmet. Right before Chief pulls her chip Cortana notices the cryo bay wall start to bend. "We need to move now, marking the nearest escape pod

"Cortana what's going on? Why did you wake me?"

"Something happened and I don't know what. The Dawn just started being torn apart. We either make it to the escape pod and drift in space until a UNSC recovers us, or you'll have to practice your deep space swimming."

"I'd prefer the former. Has anything boarded the Dawn?"

"From what I observed no. This is happening on it's own." As Chief makes his way toward the escape pod, he is locked in a corridor.

"Cortana get this door open."

"I can't. I don't have access."

"You are human, but you kill like a machine." A voice echoes throughout the ship. Chief reaches for his A.R. and take a defensive stance.

"Who's there."

"You are filled with emotion, yet you seal it behind a wall."

"Cortana what's happening?"
