DEBATE

FADE IN:

INT. DEON'S BEDROOM - DAY

Deon's teen face is reminiscent of recent puberty and looks angelic in his sleep.

Suddenly he JERKS awake, GASPING!

BEGIN MONTAGE:

INT. BATHROOM - DAY: He washes his face in the sink.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY: He makes himself a cereal breakfast.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY: He eats his breakfast on the couch, watching cartoons on the TV.

INT. LIVING ROOM - LATER: He keeps watching TV — the breakfast bowl is empty.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY: He dresses up for the day.

INT. BEDROOM - LATER: He checks himself in the mirror. He wears a white formal shirt with black trousers.

INT. BEDROOM - LATER: Hoodie on!

INT. BEDROOM - LATER: Backpack on!

EXT. DEON'S HOUSE - DAY: Deon waiting for AMANDA in the driveway.

END OF MONTAGE.

Amanda is a rather young WOMAN (30s), considering she is a mother of 3. She walks out of the house distracted by her phone, juggling keys, and purse, no make-up on.

Deon leads her impatiently to their very common trusty city car and gets in — he is nervous.

FLASH-CUTS:

INT. CAR - SUBURBS - DAY

AMANDA: You excited?

Deon is staring blankly out of the window at the outside world. It all looks so far away and bland.

AMANDA: You don't look excited.

DEON: I'm...

AMANDA: What?

(ad lib)

DEON: I'm just thinking.

AMANDA: (busy) What are you thinking about?

The ride on the Motorway is less bumpy but louder.

DEON: What if they don't like me? Will they fire me?

AMANDA: (chuckles) Why wouldn't they like you?

DEON: (shrugging) 'cause I'm me!

AMANDA: (snorts) Why would they fire for being 'you'?

DEON: I don't know... ...I'm... ...'weird'.

AMANDA: (reassuring) You're not weird.

They exit the Motorway...

MATCH-CUT TO:

EXT. CITY STREETS - DAY

...into flows of cars in and out, pedestrians, bicycles, bikes, buses, mopeds, and traffic lights.

Amanda CHUCKLES suddenly, startling Deon.

AMANDA: (tenderly) My little screenwriter!

She drives into a parking lot and stops so that she can finally look at Deon in the eyes without distractions.

AMANDA: You ready to go work, 'businessboy'?

DEON: (embarrassed) 'Mom'! (exiting) Cut it out!

Deon leaves the car while Amanda shuts it down and locks it.
