Initial Reaction:

In one word: Intriguing. CupOf_Rain gives just enough in each chapter to satisfy some questions while also dropping clues about what is coming next. (The cliffhangers! I need to find out what happens next!) At the very beginning, protagonist Katherine breaks the fourth wall and directly addresses the reader. It presents the idea that people in books live forever as long as someone is reading them, even if the people in the book and person reading it live in different countries or centuries.

I also loved the multi-modal approach in the beginning. The story uses letters, poems, and good-old prose to tell the story of Katherine and Alexis.

Strengths:

The characters are described beautifully. The protagonist loves poetry, which shows up in the form of actual poems but also in the writing style. That is a very nice touch. Chapters 1 and 2 are written in prose, but the style reads so smoothly and beautifully, it is like reading a lyrical poem!

The plot is set up well. It gives enough to satisfy my questions, such as what the problem is, where the story takes place, etc. I am guessing from that there will be a romance between Katherine and Alexis, but there might not be a happy ending...I also want to know why Irene doesn't get along with her mother and why Katherine is treated as an outcast. There are subtle clues given throughout. Wanting to know the answers makes me want to continue reading!

Improvements:

Honestly, write more of the story!!! I want to know what happens next!!! That is all.

Overall, if you are looking for a beautifully written love story, check out The Sunflower and her Moon.
