I didn't look back to check if everyone was joining the fight. The monster in front of me was enough to distract me from everyone else. As soon as I started running towards it, it had stomped up to meet me, raising its left hand in the air and smashing it where I would have been. I dodged it, barely, getting soaked from the rain that was starting to pour. I could see the raindrops and my reflection on the blade of its hand, a long black-haired girl with brown eyes staring back at me.
It lunged for me again, and I dodged under the blade as it tried to slice off my head. I smashed my Blade into its hand, attempting to chop it off. It let out a strange moan of pain that made the ground rumble.
"Blame WICKED, not me," I spat.
I pulled out the Blade, blood dripping from the end, and felt something come up behind me. I spun around quickly, faster than I could have imagined was possible, and stopped the knives from piercing my back, a metallic clang sounding as I blocked it with my Blade. I felt something tingle from deep within me, and let it consume me.
Warm currents, a shivering feeling of warmth, washed over me, and I closed my eyes despite the situation. Sparks and adrenaline coursed through my body and I opened my eyes, a strange feeling of calmness and eagerness drowning me, as my heart rate picked up. Energy coursed through my veins as the monster swung its bladed hand at me, and if I'd stood still or tried to duck, it would have still sliced me.
Instead, I found myself backflipping over the monster's hand. Which was cool. Like, really really cool.
I quit fangirling about myself and focused on the beast, letting my instinct or whatever it was that was happening to me, take over. I landed with ease, crouched, and stood up, spinning my tiny knife in my left hand and letting it fly and land on a lightbulb in the center of its face. It froze for a moment, and then let out a howl that shook the ground and rattled my bones.
Enraged, it came at me again, but was slower, causing me to connect the bubbles in my head. The lights. They're the monster's weakness.
With this new information in mind, I aimed only at the bulbs, dodging the beast's attacks and managing to kill it completely after a while.
Finally popping the last bulb, I quickly turned my attention back on the Gladers and saw Newt struggling a little. His monster had about half of the bulbs still on, and they were a little higher up. He ducked as the monster swung at him, and I found myself running towards him, dodging the lightning bolts and leaping at the last moment, straight onto the beastly thing's arm.
"Have you finally gone mad?!" Newt called out, stabbing a bulb and popping it with the knife.
"I just wanted some fun," I hollered over the storm and noise.
"You really have to check up on your definition of 'fun'. Duck!"
I did as he said, and slid my Blade across the bulbs on the beast's arms.
Pop! Pop pop pop pop!
I finally slammed my right foot into the center of its face, getting rid of the last bulb. With a last shuddering groan, the beast fell back, taking me with it, me clinging to my blade which was embedded in the thing's face. I felt myself in a flying sensation, and felt the Blade loosen from the empty face, making me jolt for one second before somehow safely landing.
"ZIA!" Newt cried out, blinded by the amount of sand whirling around thanks to the big monster falling.
"I'm alright!" I replied.
He scanned me for injuries, but then let go of it. I looked around for the others, and saw Thomas grab Teresa, Brenda, and Jorge, jumping into a pod and closing the lid. Clever boy.
"Minho! Come on!" Newt yelled at Minho who stepped away from a dead monster and started running towards us. A pretty blonde girl, about two years younger than us, with a pale complexion and brown eyes ran towards us too, probably seeking shelter or help.
"We gotta go in one of the pods!" I yelled over the wind.
They nodded as we bolted towards one of them, lifting the lid open. Newt jumped in first, then the blonde haired girl and Minho. The leader offered me a hand that I reached out to grab onto. I never grabbed it though, because it was at that moment I heard someone familiar scream in pain.
