A fetus' umbilical cord inserts on the edge of the placenta along the chorioamniotic membranes, causing fetal blood vessels to travel unprotected form the placenta until they come together and reach the protection of the umbilical cord. This means that vessels run between the amnoin and chorion before they enter the placenta.

∴ the vessels from the umbilical cord run through part of the chorionic membrane rather than directly into the placenta.

Relation to Vasa Previa:
Presenting symptoms w/ vasa previa are painless vaginal bleeding, ROM & fetal bradycardia.

Vasa previa occurs when the fetal vessels in the membranes are in close proximity to the internal os. ∴ The in the instance of a velamentous cord insertion, although the remainder of the cord is usually normal, where the vessels are unprotected, they are prone to compression and rupturing, esp. when in the cervical os (ie, vasa previa).

Other types Types de Cord insertions Incl:
Central insertion - umbilical cord placement into the center of the placenta - aprox 90% of pregnancies
Marginal insertion - less than 2cm sideways of placental margin, about 7% of pregnancies. marginal insertions may also develop into velamentous insertions

Abbreviations used:
ROM - Rupture of membranes
