In & Out of the Beams of a Neon Moon

Since Ryan had insisted on everyone staying on the bus Brinleigh and I left our hotel room after going at one another 3 more times since our talk. Right now, the two of us were snuggled in the back of the cab, headed back to the track. The sun had set hours ago. As we rode in the back of the cab, I watched the city lights flying by us and let my thoughts drift back to the day that we had. I don't remember having a day that was as good as this one has been in a long time. Then again, every day that I spent with Brinleigh was becoming better than the last.
The feelings I feel for her just keep getting stronger and stronger. I know that I am on the verge of falling for this girl and it scares the living shit out of me. She has the power to hurt me more than anyone ever has. And even though I'm scared of what will happen between us and where this road is leading, I'm more scared that she won't be by my side.

"Penny for your thoughts." said Brinleigh, lifting her head from my chest and looking up at me.

"Just thinking about today." I said, only giving her the partial truth. There was no way I was going to tell her that I thought I was falling in love with her. Not yet anyway.

"It was a good day huh?" she said resting her head back on my chest, over my heart.

"We need a repeat of it soon. I just don't know when that will be. We have races coming up every weekend." I said, my good mood sinking because I knew today was going to have to hold us over for quite a few weeks.

"I know. But at least I'll be on the bus with you and we get to spend every day together- even if it is with the guys." Said Brinleigh.

"I know." I said lifting her right hand and bringing it to my lips, kissing her knuckles. "And I'm thankful for that. But I know this week is going to be busy. We won't have much time to sneak away until maybe Friday night."

"Seems like so far away." said Brinleigh.

"I agree." I said.

The two of us fell into silence then, just enjoying one another's company. All too soon though, the cab stopped outside of the gates to the track, needing one of our passes to get back in. Leaning forward, I passed him my pit pass which he soon handed back to me. When we reached the buses, I saw that the guys had set up a fire pit and were all sitting around it drinking and ribbing one another.
The moment they saw Brinleigh climb out of the cab, Gabe, Ryder, Adam, and Alex all yelled her name. I watched as she walked over to them, each of them grabbing her and engulfing her in a hug. Even though I knew their hugs were innocent, I couldn't help the momentary surge of jealousy that I felt because they were touching her.
When I reached the group of guys, I reached down into the cooler and grabbed a beer and took a seat in one of the now empty chairs.

"So, what did you two do today?" asked Gabe, slurring his speech slightly.

"We rode four wheelers." said Brinleigh, smiling over at me. The guys didn't need to know about all that happened today.

"Well, I knew that already. I saw your post on instagram." said Alex. "Which brings me to my next question, you two a couple now? Officially?"

"Yeah, we are." I said. When I gave the guys my answer, Brinleigh walked over to me and sat down in my lap. Taking my beer from my hand and taking a long pull before handing it back.

"Well it's about time the two of you made it official." said Ryan as he rounded the corner of the bus and took the seat beside me. "At least now I don't have to worry about the two of you becoming friends with benefits or some shit like that."

"Uncle Ryan!" yelled Brinleigh, smacking him on the shoulder.

All of us sat around drinking and joking with one another for about an hour before Darnell dragged out his guitar. It had been a few weeks since I'd had the chance to play. I missed playing. When I finally got the chance to get back to Charlotte, I would be bringing my Gibson on the road with me from now on.
I listened as Darnell played random cords and riffs. He was good.

"Mind if I play?" I asked, not really expecting him to say yes.

"Nah, man. Go ahead." he said, passing me the guitar. Since Brinleigh was sitting on the arm of her uncle's adirondack chair, I reached for it.

"Gibson J-45?" I asked.

"Yeah man. You know guitars?" said Darnell.

"Not really. I have one like it at home." I said.

Sitting on the edge of the chair, I positioned my fingers on the frets and began strumming the chords to Amarillo Morning. Losing myself in the music, I hadn't even realized that I had started singing until I finished the song and all the guys started commenting on my voice.

"Dude! What the fuck are you doing pushign a jack when you have a voice like?" that asked Ryder.

"Because I know there are people that are better than me. I play music for fun, not because I want to make a career out of it." I said, shrugging my shoulders.

"Sing something else." said Brinleigh, effectively cutting off any further questions.

"What do you want to hear?" I asked.

"Neon Moon." she replied.

Positioning myself in the chair, I began strumming and singing.

When the sun goes down on my side of town
That lonesome feeling comes to my door
And the whole world turns blue
There's a rundown bar 'cross the railroad tracks
I got a table for two way in the back
Where I sit alone and think of losing you
I spend most every night
Beneath the light
Of a neon moon
Now if you lose your one and only
There's always room here for the lonely
To watch your broken dreams
Dance in and out of the beams
Of a neon moon
I think of two young lovers running wild and free
I close my eyes and sometimes see
You in the shadows of this smoke-filled room
No telling how many tears I've sat here and cried
Or how many lies that I've lied
Telling my poor heart she'll come back someday
Oh, but I'll be alright
As long as there's light
From a neon moon
Oh, if you lose your one and only
There's always room here for the lonely
To watch your broken dreams
Dance in and out of the beams
Of a neon moon
The jukebox plays on, drink by drink
And the words of every sad song seem to say what I think
And its hurt inside of me, ain't never gonna end
Oh, but I'll be alright
As long as there's light
From a neon moon
Oh, if you lose your one and only
There's always room here for the lonely
To watch your broken dreams
Dance in and out of the beams
Of a neon moon
To watch your broken dreams
Dance in and out of the beams
Of a neon moon
Oh, watch your broken dreams
Dance in and out of the beams
Of a neon moon

When I finished the song, I passed the guitar back to Darnell. Good thing too because Brinleigh decided that she was done sitting with her uncle. She climbed into my lap, tucking her head under my chin and resting it on my chest. My arms immediately went around her, holding her in place.

"You got talent man." said Ryan, tipping his beer towards me.

"Thanks man." I replied.

"Anyways, I'm tucking in for the night. See you boys in the morning." Said Ryan as he stood from his chair before turning to Brinleigh and saying "Love you sweetheart."

"Love you too Uncle Ryan."
