Chapter 40: Awkwardness

[It appeared as though humanity would be destroyed by demons. But a single mage saved them all. He was called the wizard king, and he became a legend.]

Noelle POV:

"Vanessa, I need some advice," I say, shaking the witch out from her deep slumber. "Please wake up. It's important!" However, despite my attempts, Vanessa does not budge. "Come on. It's about Asta!"

Suddenly, Vanessa's body rises from the couch and looks me in the eyes, "what are the details?" She says as she grabs a bottle of nearby wine and gesturing me to sit down next to her. 

Promptly, I sit down and fidget around in the seat while working up the courage to explain the situation.  "Well, you see... the thing is," I feel myself becoming flustered. I rest my hands on my knees and find myself losing concentration. My mind wanders and finds itself back at what happened in the lake. My body begins to get hot, and I can't keep from smiling. "The thing is," I blurt out loudly and abruptly, causing Vanessa to jump, "the thing is, Asta and I did something at the lake, and um..." my words trail off, and I just look at Vanessa.

Vanessa's eyes widen as she realizes the implications of what I just said, "Wait, don't tell me you, my sweet Noelle," she grabs my shoulders and looks me in the eyes, "I know I told you to be assertive, but I couldn't have expected you to act this quickly!" Vanessa lets go of my shoulders and leans back on the couch, sighing, "so what exactly happened between you two?"

"Are you mad at me?" 

"Huh," Vanessa says, looking back at me, "why would I be mad? I'm just surprised. I didn't know you had it in you, girl."

I blush and look away from Vanessa, "thanks, I guess."

"Oh, don't mention it! There's no way a boy like Asta wouldn't fall for your charms," she says while smirking, causing me to turn red. 

"A-Anyways," I say, taking control back over the conversation, "Earlier, Asta and I were at the lake. We can back maybe an hour ago, and I think he's sleeping in his room now. On our way back, I didn't say a single word to him. I wasn't mad or anything. I was just embarrassed. I think he may have thought I was mad at him or something. And tomorrow, I said we could go to Hage Village. I feel like things will be awkward." I vent out my thoughts to Vanessa, and she listens to what I have to say. After she takes a few moments to internalize what I told her, she formulates her response. 

"I think I might have told you this before, but just talk to him, no matter how awkward it is. Also, you don't have to tell me what the two of you did, but how could you possibly make things awkward between Asta. The kids practically an open book. Also, I find it hard to believe that he'd let that awkward air sit for long. I guarantee by tomorrow he'll be all over you again."

Hearing Vanessa's words give me a sense of ease, and the nervousness I felt regarding the situation begins to fade. "Thanks, Vanessa. I feel a lot better," I say, standing up tall, "tomorrow, everything will be fine!" 

"That's the spirit, girl!" Vanessa says as she drinks directly from her wine bottle. "By the way, if you don't mind me asking. What exactly happened with you two? You don't have to tell me, but I am curious." Vanessa says, scooching closer to me. 

Shocked by her sudden interest, I fall back onto the couch and hide my face in my hands. Quietly, I mumble, "he put his finger...." my words trail off, becoming incomprehensible mush.

"What did you say?" 

"D-Don't make me repeat it," I say, looking at Vanessa with a fully flushed face. 

Vanessa smiles and puts her arm around me, "oh Noelle, we have all night, no rush!"
