Warnings: ANGST! Manipulation. Fluff at the end.
'Cause I fell from the pedestal
Right down the rabbit hole
Long story short, it was a bad time
Pushed from the precipice
Clung to the nearest lips
Long story short, it was the wrong guy
It had been a couple months since... well everything. You could barely talk about it if you wanted to. You practically disappeared, you'd left your job. Not because you wanted to, but because your boss said a resignation would look better.
You spent more time at home with your husband. Things had been better since that night but you could still feel that dull ache in your heart. Things were still far from perfect.
You hadn't spoken or seen Steve since that night either. You still has his number in your phone and there were moments where you contemplated getting in contact with him but you didn't trust yourself. He probably didn't want to talk to you anyway.
You were sat at home by the fire with a book in hand. You weren't reading it though. You just stared into the fire watching as the flames danced. It was getting pretty late, the sun had set and you hadn't bothered to turn the lights on. Just letting the glow from the fire cast a warm glow around the room.
The sound of the front door opening pulls you from your thoughts. Looking in that direction you see you husband stood looking over at you with his shoulders hunched.
"Hey, you okay?" You ask quietly.
"I'm sorry, it was all my fault" he says quietly dropping his head avoiding your gaze.
"What? What was your fault?" You ask sitting up furrowing your brows in confusion.
You husband slowly walks over to you not meeting your eyes, his feet dragging along the floor.
"Everything" he says finally looking over at you.
You search his face for an answer to what he meant but find no answer.
"I knew about you and Steve, I saw you getting close to him and pulling more and more away from me. I thought our marriage was over" he explains and your breath catches in your throat.
You and Steve had been so careful but clearly not enough. You go to say something but your husband beats you to it.
"One evening I was in a bar and I saw that woman you know Karyn, I was tipsy and I told her everything about what was going on" he tells you.
"She then told me she could help me and started asking all these different questions about you, after that I didn't really hear anything from her. Until the day of that article" he continues and you feel you heart starting to hammer in your chest. You really dreaded where this was going, you were desperately hoping that what you thought wasn't true.
"She called me, told me she had sorted the problem. She'd organised that call, edited it so it made you look bad and leaked it to the press. She said by knocking you down I could swoop in a be the hero" he finishes.
You wanted to be sick.
The hell you had gone through the last couple months was because of her. She used the in-formation that your husband had given to tear you down. The more you thought about it the more you could feel the walls closing in.
"Baby" you husband whisper reaching out for your hand.
You quickly move it from his grasp looking over at him with a mixture of hate and disgust.
"How could you?" You mutter you voice shaking.
"I didn't mean for it to happen I'm so sorry i never wanted you to get hurt" he says his voice wavering.
